They are shit now but they won’t be for long. Personally, I’m tired of Hollywood owning all our media and telling me all I need in life are super hero movies.

We might actually have a decent indie scene soon, especially when it comes to things like anime.

The indie scene for movies is genuinely great. I’m not entirely sure what you mean by any of this.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t know of many full fledged indie movies with hour plus runtimes. The only one that comes to mind is Primer. It’s essentially non-existant when compared to the indie music and video game scene imo.

There are tons of low budget indie films out there. If you want to see something other than the usual multiplex stuff check out a local film festival in your area.

They just aren’t nearly as popular due to lack of marketing but they definitely exist. The biggest limiter is the “full fledged” part since most of the better pure indie films end up getting a studio as a distributor and then they end up not actually full fledged.

          Wow let me correct you.

Nah people are making plenty of movies without any need of permission to do so.

Give a quick scroll through Amazons movie library or even Netflix or Tubi sometime and see all the stuff that is new but never was talked about. Within the last few years I have even watched probably half a dozen movies in actual theaters made by production companies that have a fraction of the power as Disney and I even enjoyed a bunch of them.

Pig had a 3 million budget and painting with invisible hands was produced by MGM. These aren’t in any way indie.

I know sometimes we get good movies and my comment is clearly hyperbole, but with the current price tag on making a movie, the only way you can make a movie without asking permission is with a fat trustfund.

Ok well Hundreds of Beavers was $150,000 budget and came out in 2022. A different man I have been told is great.

It’s just needlessly down bashing based on the fact that you aren’t participating with the smaller budget movies.

Yes it’s better when it’s economically equal to jump in and let more people tell stories but people will keep making them anyways and I think it’s best to recognize them doing it. It’s always expensive to make a movie and always has been or we lower our standards to not require anything more than what is possible.

It feels like you are complaining you don’t have the indie scene you want yet but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I’ve been enjoying low budget indie movies for years with spaghetti man and Velocipastor.

My bad, I wasn’t trying to bash it or complain about it. My comment is more in line with the accessibility and not at all about the quality but I can see how it could be perceived that way with my use of words like non-existant.

Counterpoint: I anticipate this would cause an over-saturation of the indie film space with poorly made AI generated films and scripts from people attempting to capitalize on the new technology, and further creating a schism with the rest of the art community as generative AI continues to train on other artists artworks and films.

I think it is a cool tool to be added to the repertoire of creatives. I think it may create some very interesting pieces, in time. I agree Hollywood needs some good competition. I don’t think AI is going to generate that kuch additional creativity, and if the number of super heroes movies is bad when it takes so much work, effort, time, and money to make a feature length film without AI, just wait until the next big fad takes off and see how much AI contributes to adding even more to the pile.
