all the people i’ve met who don’t think Juneteenth should be a holiday come in one of two flavors:
i defaulted from past experience into assuming you fit into category 1, and for that i apologize. lord knows i’ve experienced things reaching my knowledge base later than others because information that truly matters spreads slow, and the internet has not been the accelerant to information spread we often delude ourselves into thinking it is.
i grew up being told, by Asian people, that “Asian” is a slur to them, and that it unfairly lumps them all into a single category. the term they asked me to use instead is considered by most Asians today to be outdated, and a slur.
again. i take ownership of that i jumped too fast to being unkind, and that this was ultimately unconstructive. i will work harder to do better in the future

the key is neither the marketplace for ideas nor debate are good models for accomplishing anything productive. they do not encourage people to come to them ready to listen, but instead create an arena of professional wrestling in the format of “discussion.”
a better model is the idea that you have a big pot of soup. your soup is your idea. you invite people to add ingredients to the soup. as a group, any time someone brings a new ingredient to the soup (a new mode of promoting and participating with the idea) you have the opportunity to integrate that ingredient or to say it doesn’t go with the rest of what’s already in the soup.
your goal, with your idea soup, is to invite as many people as you can to add ingredients so that your pot of soup is as big as possible and can feed as many people as possible. that means when you reject ingredients, you have to explain clearly why those ingredients don’t belong with the rest of the soup
still. boycotts aren’t about all or nothing. they’re a long term strategy of learning to find alternatives, build up alternative ways of being to what’s presented, and redirecting power in small ways that make a difference when there’s mass engagement.
take for example. someone in this thread referred to eurovision as an unofficial pride event for people who don’t feel safe expressing that identity outside of this period. maybe this year that person goes and watches eurovision at a locally owned bar that’s playing it so fewer screens are tuned in. there maybe they just get to know some other people who are feeling a way about this. further, you can also dedicate a little bit of time looking for explicit queer representation from participating countries on Bandcamp to talk to others about. these decisions, even if they’re not coming from someone who is disengaging from eurovision entirely, are still acts of boycott

bigots often misidentify themselves as the victims of hate campaigns because they really do believe the lies that are embedded in dogwhistles. like… there’s a lot of ICE supporters who don’t have the awareness that when the current US admin calls someone “a criminal” they mean “as a classification of person” not as “person who does crimes” or when they use “Low IQ” they mean “minority”
like… there’s a ton of people out there who actually think “Michele Obama is a low IQ person” is about Michele Obama specifically instead of the result of calling all Black people “low IQ”
so in the case of Orson Scott Card, what’s happening is when he says “be more patient and analyze your misconceptions about people” he doesn’t mean marginalized people, he means about himself, a person with a dominant identity in culture whose been gently asked to make room for other people feels marginalized by that request

“harlot” comes from the pantomime stock character Harlot. clowns have traditionally been from the same stratus of society as whores, and have often been engaged in sex work on the side maintaining their show persona (the clown), their bar persona (the whore), and their own real day to day identity that is kept separate from the others to keep people from asking too many questions.

in marginalized spaces we work to recognize that “normal” is only perceived as “normal” because of an established hegemony of violence. you perceive yourself as normal because of your privelege. we ask you, in our spaces, to leave that at the door. that you perceive this as persecution is telling. i’m starting to think this was never about you being uncomfortable with encouraging self harm and suicide, but instead the surrounding ways that you engage with minority issues.
you may not percieve yourself to be a bigot, and maybe you aren’t, but not being a bigot isn’t the bar you need to clear to be welcomed by marginalized people. you need to be an active anti-bigot. comments like what i quoted above are indicative that you are not quite there yet.
