Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What kind of things do you think movies are most dishonest about?
491·10 days agoAlso archers being told to “fire”
as firing didn’t exist until gunpowder, the instruction wouldn’t make sense. Like telling a soldier now to “activate the positronic tacyons!” instead of “fire”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What did you learn by being DISLIKED at work?
3·10 days agoSome have been useful things about being more incisive, direct, clear, plainspoken.
Others have just been that people are competitive and look for any advantage to get “ahead” and curry favor with the boss, even when there’s no competition, no prize, no winner, no advantage. They just feel that by “beating” someone they “win” somehow - or might in the future.
In the latter case i console myself that a complement from one of my coworkers means almost nothing in the grand scheme of things and the promotions at my job hardly make a difference in pay but mean starting an hour earlier.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your favourite song in another language?
1·14 days agoI speak a little French, not fluent, but love Jacques Brel.
sure but I’m saying that’s the cultural part - just because we do that in our culture doesn’t mean it’s any more correct than another method of counting .
First time mothers can spend more than 24 hours in labor, and the longest ever labor recorded is 75 days.
And do you count the first true contraction as the start? the first signs of dilation? or 6cm dilation? or water breaking?
If the baby doesn’t change much in the last few days or weeks of pregnancy, is it that different from the baby the moment of birth?
makes as much sense as taking your birth date as the end of the birth process rather than the start - or even conception.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What TV shows are absolutely worth watching?
6·16 days agoHaven’t seen The League of Gentlemen mentioned (not to be confused with the movie with extraordinary in the title)
even the french will often ellide the ⟨ʁ⟩ to ⟨ʁ̞⟩ or even [χ], [ʀ], or [r]. Granted none of those are lip-rounded, but I wouldn’t give a Japanese speaker a hard time over /L/ pronunciation either.
I dont really care all that much, I’m not a super fan, but I really don’t think the drumming on the Beatles is even remotely bad, it’s just in a particular style.
yes, how dare they mock such a solemn and tasteful threnody
ah that’s something known as the Sunk Cost Guarantee of Success

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•I sat behind someone on a plane who was using ChatGPT to write the materials and remarks for a sustainability and climate conference.
101·18 days agothis made me realize I’ve only ever been to conferences (in either supply chain or data) because a job made me and I’ve only ever seen it as a chore. Even attending talks is only to be able to take notes, type notes and send them to colleagues as part of work.

Can confirm in the 1940s you could’ve gossiped that Tierney twosomed Feldmen the packager against Jackie-look Cassini and be perfectly understood.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you find friends without kids ?
1·23 days agoI’m nearly 43, so at the prime age of struggling to keep friendships alive. Here’s what I do - I appreciate I am not exactly a typical person - but also I don’t have kids which makes me slightly different anyway.
I do comedy a lot. Helps with making friends.
I also run in a run club
I take classes - comedy/clown (i trained at a clown school instead of going to university), acting, swordfighting, tap dancing, music. Music is usually 1:1 but then I go to comedy and music jams and meet people.
But one can extrapolate to - pottery, painting, robot building, hackathons, book clubs, political groups, conservation, hiking…
Usually I wait til week 2 or 3 and suggest grabbing a bite or a drink before or after class. Do it enough and you just end up with friends who invite you to birthday parties and shit and now you have friends.
And then my wife’s friends all have partners and we’ve formed a HABS (husbands and boyfriends) movie club. We are currently watching a Sylvester Stallone movie once a week.

im sorry - Greggs is not haute cuisine but their sausage rolls aren’t unsatisfying or bad tasting.
