Just blocked lemmy.ml from my Lemmy account, and I swear to god it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done on this platform. My homepage feels actually clean now.

For the past few months I’d been seeing a lot of tankie posting and pretty much far-left propaganda on my feed. It got tiring enough that I finally checked my blocked-user list, and realized pretty much everyone I’d blocked was from lemmy.ml. So I just blocked the whole instance instead.

Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist: I used to think Lemmy itself was an echo chamber. Turns out lemmy.ml was the problem the entire time. Probably the reason I tolerated it for so long is that I agreed with a lot of what they posted, but like an oversaturated meme, I’d had enough. Browsing the platform was starting to feel way too tiring instead of fun, which defeats the point of being here in the first place.

The breaking point was seeing some dude post a “meme” implying North Korea and China are basically communist utopias and that the West sucks. I mean, the West does suck, but come on - you’re saying North Korea is the ideal the West should strive for? What the hell…

No! It isn’t propaganda! You’re the one who is parroting propaganda!

Saying russia and china are dictatorships and stuff, i saw a post on VK that said exactly the contrary! And it must be true!

Xi Jinping said he cares about free speech, he can’t lie, only western politicians lie!

Extremism etc has broad appeal to disenfranchised people of a certain maturity level with an absence of critical thinking skills.

IMO one of the things that’s ruining the internet currently is all the young people who don’t know shit about fuck and are completely unaware of it. Blind leading the blind shit.

I think it’s a combination. There are accounts which run classic FSB style; series of innocuous posts and then ZELENSKY IS A NAZI, then innocuous posts.

Meanwhile, ignorant dumb kids who have been dealt a rough hand with covid, housing prices, ai, trump, climate change etc are pretty susceptible to the dumbest but most appealing simple answers/boogymen.

Add in the Internet’s ability to help you avoid ever encountering an opinion with which you disagree and you’ve got a very toxic breeding ground for the worst and dumbest ideas.

Let’s not forget the 15-year-old nihilistic edgelords who, for a change, aren’t outright Nazis, if only for the reason because there were so many nihilistic outright Nazi edgelords and Wehraboos out there that it had become too mainstream. Also, they read somewhere that the Red Army destroyed the Wehrmacht which automatically makes the Soviet Union superior to the Third Reich. So they went full Stalinist instead.

There must be at least some who have found their way from WoT to Reddit and from there to Lemmy.

At least those who used to run in Tumblr’s “more leftist than thou” rat race that apparently suggested that being enby is more leftist than being trans to such a degree that trans isn’t leftist enough are usually too feeble to go full Tankie and support genocides if committed in the name of communism.

That’s kind of what I’m getting at by turning the phrase around. Like teenagers have always been dumb. It’s part of the learning process.

But todays kids have been deprived that fuckery and so they literally don’t know shit about it. Than their reality is whatever first impression tik tok gives them about anything.

I don’t think Russian intelligence would waste their time on a platform as small as Lemmy. They’ve propagandized enough people that it’s simply self-perpetuating here. The tankies are still exposed to other outlets where they’d see Russian propaganda and repeat it here.

We’re officially on the decline. A laughing stock to our enemies and a pariah to our allies. Even if the American people pull off a miracle somehow in 2028 and elect someone like Ocasio Cortez to the presidency. No one in Europe should just forgive everything and get all buddy buddy with us again. We’ve only shown we cannot be trusted. It feels like people are upset about running into users who are politically left-leaning… on federated social media.

That’s like being upset about encountering queer people in the arts, or chuds in the weightlifting space, or conservatives at the gun range. What the hell did you expect?

Nobody in the year 2026 is using the word tankie in the context of the internal disagreement between British Trotskyists and Khrushchevists about the Hungarian uprising in the 1950s. Even you immediately - one sentence later - pivot to claiming it must means “authoritarian Stalinish stuff”, which is both incredibly vague and has nothing to do with the Hungarian revolution; a term that can be used for anyone to the left of the western Overton window.

So forgive me if having been on Lemmy for several years now. I call complete bullshit on your statement.

but i haven’t seen the users do anything.

It’s not the users people block over, blocking an instance doesn’t stop you from interacting with the users.

What it does, is block every community from that instance from your feed, that’s it.

People block .ml, because while some decent communities may exist, their admins will see your comments elsewhere, then find any/all comments on their instance and either harass you or ban you.

The block just means you won’t accidentally stumble into a place they control.

The minority of users who are really problematic, are likely to be banned everywhere else already

People block .ml, because while some decent communities may exist, their admins will see your comments elsewhere, then find any/all comments on their instance and either harass you or ban you.

I’m not sure what you mean. If someone harasses you then you can just block them. If you block an instance it’s users can still see your posts elsewhere and comment can’t they? I don’t politically align with the Lemmy devs but lemmy.ml is their instance and just like piefed, mbin, and others they can run their personal instance as they see fit. Isn’t that the whole point of federation?

Yes, I literally said that earlier in the comment you replied to…

blocking an instance doesn’t stop you from interacting with the users.

          And…

they can run their personal instance as they see fit. Isn’t that the whole point of federation?

Yes, that’s why I don’t make posts that they need to change, I just chimed in and provided context for why blocking their instance so you don’t accidentally stumble into their places…

you claimed that they do mod level moderation all over the place, deleting things they don’t like

your “proof” was an admin enforcing the instance rules, which every good instance admin does.

This post made me curious so I took a look at my block list, and almost all of my blocked accounts are from .world. I’ve only blocked two .ml users. I wonder how much that varies by instance.

Well lemmy.world is statistically one of the larger instances. So that’s not strictly unusual. And thankfully some of the worst from ml tend to stay in their Echo Chambers being self-aware enough.

Every time I see people from a handful of the same instance always try to pivot any discussion of one of the other handful of instances back to a criticize of .world, I go look at their post history.

I always see the same thing; almost all .world postings, a few of the others, and none on their home instance, or any of the ones they’re defending

I keep asking, never getting an answer:

Why do you hang around .world so much if you don’t like it?

      Why not just block .world?

Why do you hang around .world so much if you don’t like it?

          While I appreciate the answer…

Part of the question involved who I was asking:

Every time I see people from a handful of the same instance always try to pivot any discussion of one of the other handful of instances back to a criticize of .world, I go look at their post history.

“It is what it is” and commenting where the people are makes perfect rational sense.

          But…

I’m assuming you don’t immediately try to turn any criticism against an instance whose politics you agree with, back on the mainstream instance.

If you did, then it wouldn’t be rational to spend all your time here

I’m assuming you don’t immediately try to turn any criticism against an instance whose politics you agree with, back on the mainstream instance.

I think that many people reflexively speak out against perceived unfairness. Why should they stay silent when they see people from a problematic mainstream instance constantly complaining about other instances that they see nothing wrong with, the vast majority of the time without evidence, I might add? I mean, it adds up to endless whining, even in completely unrelated threads. I often see it go like this:

Person 1: “Hey, did you hear about this new scientific discovery? Pretty interesting, huh?”

Person 2 (very often from .world or piefed.social): “Well, just stay away from the DaMn tAnKiEs! They’re horrible!”

Person 1 (or Person 3): “Huh? I didn’t say anything about any tankies. Besides, .world or piefed has plenty of idiots too.”

I’ve rarely ever seen anyone grumble about .world in a completely unrelated thread without cause (i.e., in response to a .world person saying something stupid), but I see that all the time against mostly the socialist/communist instances with some spillover to the anarchist instances. After a while, people start to react automatically to any complaints about other instances.

But that’s appropriate in this thread, since it’s specifically about a person on lemmy.world complaining about lemmy.ml. The scenario I was describing was of someone chiming in about the “tankies” in a thread completely unrelated to Lemmy instances or politics, like gardening or movies. I feel like I see this all the freaking time, but I suppose I could be wrong. It’s always a possibility.

Throbbing_banjo was curious about their blocklist, they did not criticize anything. The reason for having a lot of lemmy.world users on there, as Eldritch said, is most likely statistics. You talk about being rational while battling made up phantoms.

I think you can be legitimately a Leftist but also not insane. There’s a lot of posters over in that part of Lemmy who talk like they’d be overjoyed at the idea of rounding up everyone who’d ever expressed a view to the right of Trotsky, on Day Zero, and sending them to the gulags for being an Enemy of the Revolution.

Experimenting with blocklists is fine and how you find your comfort zone on Lemmy.

I once made an experiment in which I blocked lemmy.world - not out of spite, but to just see what the rest of Lemmy has to offer. Turns out, quite much!

Still, too many niche communities are hosted on .world, so here I am again.

It’s a long story but basically after some stupid drama, lemmy.world banned discussion of cat food unless there was scientific evidence presented that the cat food was healthy for the cat. The drama had been about vegan cat food discussions in the vegan discussion group. Vegan cat food turns out to be a thing and appears to have enough approvals to be sold in pet stores, but people on .world wanting to talk about it should come over here to .ml. No I wasn’t a participant in the vegan group discussion itself. I made some posts in the surrounding drama thread that you can probably find in my .world profile from shortly after I joined.

Lemmy.world’s admin (not community mods but the actual instance admin) decreed that lemmy.world was going to be like Wikipedia, where anything controversial that you posted had to be accompanied by a research citation, more or less. The specific statement under dispute was that brand XYZ vegan cat food was ok to feed to your cat. A bunch of idiots howled “cats are obligate carnivores, hur hur! They can’t survive on a vegan diet! Mods, delete that comment!!!” and the site admin sided with the idiots. So I had to escape from the stupidity. Are you still confused? Btw the vegan cat food is perfectly fine for cats as far as I can tell. No I’m not about to go look for diffs links so some of those details may be garbled by now.

I don’t think the citation policy was ever enforced on anything else, but anything that crazy is hard to forget.

.world also defederated hexbear because it didn’t like hexbear’s politics, but I’m a regular on hexbear’s covid community (which is pretty good and not that political) so I had to go elsewhere for it. I can still reach it from .ml but this convinced me that the federation model is a failure. There’s no giant Spez overlord who can censor you, but there are 100 petty instance admins who can censor you instead. I’m still on Lemmy to stay away from Spez though.

we’re all blocking instances and users we don’t like

People commonly think that everybody else sort of thinks and acts the same way that they do. Sometimes it’s that way, but a lot of the time it isn’t. I didn’t block a single instance until I think last week. (It was lemmy.ml, not too coincidentally.) That includes my six months on piefed, as well as the several years before that on lemmy.world. I had considered blocking them in the past, but it was only recently that several accounts from there started behaving super-aggressively to me.

I’m just reluctant to block entire instances because I feel like I’ll miss out on something. But at this point, I think if you’re still on lemmy.ml, then you’re probably not somebody who I want to interact with. But that’s because it’s just famous for being tankies.

Blocking an instance just hides posts to communities from there. I have ml blocked but still see posts and comments by their users. I don’t know whether this is somehow magically different for everyone else since every discussion I’ve seen on the matter has at least one person claiming otherwise.

I am sure it depends on what interface you’re using for the content. Like, what app or web UI, and even what are the settings for that UI. For example, I use Voyager on mobile, and there was one build where I blocked a person and could still see and reply to all of their comments. Obviously that was a bug, but it shows that blocking behavior depends on the UI.

At any rate, I double-checked. I used a private window and went to lemmy.ml to find a post there where the OP for that post had also commented, and when I went to that post through piefed’s interface, I was still able to see the post, but it had a message at the top about me blocking the instance, but I was not able to see the comment from the OP under their own post. (Edit: But I could see the other comments, even the one that the OP had responded to.)

So, I can say that, from what I can see, at least in that situation, piefed.social was blocking comments from a person who I didn’t specifically block as an individual, but was a member of an instance that I had blocked.

To start, I’m not trying to have an argument about this.

So, I can say that, from what I can see, at least in that situation, piefed.social was blocking comments from a person who I didn’t specifically block as an individual, but was a member of an instance that I had blocked.

Your description doesn’t specify much about the origins of OP or the post. Was the community an “@lemmy.ml” community? If so I would expect it to be blocked. Was their account an “@lemmy.ml” account? If so I wouldn’t expect that to change anything.

I see a lot of content from ml users, but no posts to their communities, and I use the default Lemmy UI. I haven’t made a Piefed account before but ActivityPub (the federation protocol) is responsible for deciding what is and isn’t blocked based on your lists AFAIK so I wouldn’t expect any differences. That is to say, the included blocking features prevent the UI from receiving blocked posts, the UI shouldn’t be responsible for hiding them.

It was a lemmy.ml community. I could only see anything because I specifically looked up the user who posted it.

You can try it yourself. If you don’t like the way Lemmy acts, then try making an account on a Piefed instance and see how it’s different. I had heard Piefed was better, so I tried out an account, and decided I liked it better.

When you mentioned this behavior, I actually expected that Piefed would probably handle it in a way that I’d prefer.

And besides, the original Lemmy devs are the ones who run lemmy.ml.

PieFed allows true instance blocking. Lemmy’s “instance block” function is so misleadingly named that it might just qualify as disinformation. While it does hide communities located on that instance, it still allows: users on that instance to see, reply to, and vote (brigade) on your content, and to send you DMs, which originally did not trigger notifications but then the Lemmy devs reversed that to allow these “blocked” users to spam your DMs even while triggering notifications every single time. Which btw I note can last for WEEKS and WEEKS if you make the mistake of saying something remotely controversial (or not supportive enough of their chosen echo chamber talking points).

So PieFed users can do it, while basically nobody else on Lemmy can, at least not very easily (there are some antiquated apps that allowed it, but iirc those have not been updated in years, so then to make it happen you basically have to use the web interface exclusively - which most people dislike for some reason, and then implement a custom uBlock Origin filter code… and even that only hides their comments from your view, while they can still e.g. vote on your content in return).

Actually, now that I think about it, I suppose there is an easy way: simply make a comment that the devs do not like on their instance, and they will quickly ban you from it! That might do the trick, I dunno?

But did you notice how irrelephant pointed out that THEY (tankies) should be entirely free to criticize whomever, wherever, however, and at whatever frequency they like…

Whereas in turn you should be allowed the freedom to… STFU about the situation?

It’s almost like there’s one rule applied to one group, while there is an entirely separate rule differently applied to the other “side”?

Watch Innuendo Studios’ The Alt-Right Playbook series (entirely free on YouTube), and you will be very glad that you did. Once you train yourself how to spot these tactics, you will never find yourself arguing with people who user toddler logic again. Ultimately, some people use logic not to arrive at any kind of Truth but instead only as a means to an end, and more often than not as a club to bash their enemies with, which is basically anyone who is vulnerable to such tactics. You cannot stop trolls from doing such, but you can prevent those tactics from working on you.

Omg you’re right! im a secret tanky, how did you figure it out!

And yes, what i desperately dont want is for you not to complain about tankies because if everyone complains about tankies enough then we’ll actually be defeated! The number one weakness for us tankies is when people complain about us, it leaves us totally powerless!!

It gets better, they also claim bush was a progressive… But yeah it’s just those they hate are the ones that deny reality.

                https://lemmy.world/comment/25161572

                OpenStars

Conservatives can be progressive too though - e.g. George Bush, the Republican President of the USA prior to Obama.

And speaking of the USA, the party on the “left”, the Democrats, are most definitely liberals, while the party on the “right”, the Republicans, are conservatives. One thing that that means is that for most of modern history, there has been no true “left” party, hence most people inside the USA - and by extension, most people on Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, etc. since they got their start and maintain their strongest base in the USA, prior to opening up to an international audience. So to your average Redditor, “left” =~ Democrat = liberal.

And ironically, as horribly incomplete as that statement is, it is still more accurate than what tankies, especially Hexbears, believe. e.g. that Russia, China, and North Korea are somehow “communist”, rather than totalitarian dictators under the guise of democracy and capitalism.

And that is why I am saying: they’re not left at all. They only claim to be, which does not make it true.

I suspect they’re complaining about this thread where OP is griping about it, not the fact that OP blocked the instance.
