As a kid, I thought this was meant to test your sound system for the movie (aka lone CRT) and would blast it as loud as I could.
Wait, it’s not for testing?
It’s a marketing gimmick to make you want to go to theaters with proper sound.
TBF pre-THX many theaters had absolute shit sound, they threw a few speakers near the screen and called it a day.
I have my home theater programmed to play an a capella version of the thx sound at startup. By default that’s what I now think about when I see this.
