Beats to study/relax to
None. I’ve tried everything from Mozart to Metallica, and any kind of music playing while I’m trying to concentrate is more of a distraction than a help.

Surprised to see it’s not mentioned here. 24 years old internet radio, still kicking, over 30 channels with hand-picked playlists, almost all of them suitable for concentration. They are sponsoring Def-Con for years. Owner has a great Fediverse presence.
Channels have very interesting concepts like Spy Jazz, Ambient over NASA’s mission broadcasts, Celtic Folk, Vaporwave, 80s Synthpop and my favorite SF 10-33 Ambient over San Francisco Police Radio live feed.

I’ve used so many noise apps and sites and this has been my favorite. The thunder storm is my go to but rain on a tent is really good too
Manheim Steamroller put out a Summer Song album that has some great rain sounds with relaxing music.
The music of SILENCE. And I never listen to music at any other time either.

I love anything by Solar Fields for tasks requiring concentrating, it’s especially good for reading scifi.
Whenever he releases a new album though I have to listen to it a few times, before I can have it on in the background… It’s very beautiful and intricate.

For years I was adamant that I didn’t like ambient, I think because I’d only been exposed to very boring drone stuff. Then I discovered Solar Fields / Carbon Based Lifeforms and it changed my musical world.
I’m quite horrible at self-promo so sadly it’s just gathering digital dust, but after 20+ years of writing dance music for myself and others, I decided to get heavily into writing ambient / chill. Made a load of trippy animation videos and setup a youtube… if you love Solar Fields, without meaning to sound bigheaded I think you’d enjoy them.
A John Digweed mix is perfect for me and ticks all the boxes

Just got back from a Sasha show tonight and was searching comments on Lemmy to see if anyone else saw his latest tour. I just saw Sasha and Digweed a few months ago and hands-down, it was in the top 2 or 3 shows I have been to in the last couple of years. (Kids are older now, so my wife and I get to see everyone we either wanted to see now or saw 20 years ago. Just met Rabbit (Rabbit in the Moon) in person a couple of weeks ago too!
To someone else who seems to know the music genre: The Sasha show was tonight was horrible. Easily in the top 5 worst in the last 25 years. The same beat for 5 hours straight with hardly any variation or creativity. It was the worst of the worst house music, and was half-wondering if 90’s euro-techno was going to start at some point. It would have been a major plus if so.
I had to elaborate so much because it was that bad, but also extremely uncharacteristic. I expected progressive house/trance or something at least more Sasha’ish at a minimum. It wasn’t the venue: They capable of hosting top-tier shows.
Is this a known thing about his solo shows? The venue was mostly dead as well: Probably only 20% of what we saw for Sasha and Digweed at the same place. Given the lack of a crowd, I am just super curious about what others know that I don’t.
I’m not sure, I’ve seen Sasha solo and it was great, maybe just as good as when I saw digweed. Similar sized crowd for both I would say.
So maybe he was just having a bad night, but I don’t really have an explanation on why Sascha put on a bad performance or why the crowd was small.
However I’m in Australia, not often we get to see digweed or sasha so when the opportunity arises it’s always a sold out show, and maybe that atmosphere makes a difference to the set, that’s all I can think of

The venue we were at just got a new sound system and it’s kinda nice. My wife and I hypothesized that since Sasha and Digweed are on tour anyway, they might have just paid Sasha to do a live sound system test while he was in the area. Turning a system test into a “show” may have just been a good way to offset his price. (I am somewhat of an audiophile so I know it’s hard to tune and test large systems. TBH, that is exactly what the night sounded like in hindsight: A 5-6hr audio test.)

Depends on how my mind is. If I need to concentrate because I am anxious, I try to put on something without serious lyrics, though gentle enough to calm my anxiety down. If I am calm yet finding it hard to focus, I tend to put on light music that I usually listen to, like my most listened to tracks: I find these tracks are the easiest to drown out with the least distractions, as I already know in my head where the tracks are going, however with new tracks even instrumentals when I lose concentration I tend to focus too much on the new tunes and such.
Many times I don’t listen to anything as my head is too cluttered that way.
