There is a very real bias against Chinese/SEA names in the west, whether it is intentional or not. Chinese students and expats know that they are far more likely to get eg, interviews and dates if they put a western name on their resume or dating profile.

3·4 days agoI work with the city housing advocacy board as a navigator who helps get people housing vouchers. Though I was mostly leaning into the doom posting, not really asking a question.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a belief you’ve done a total 180 on?English
1·5 days agoI don’t understand how older or clumsy people use these without falling in their own shit on occasion. I feel like even for a relatively athletic person, the probability of an incident surely approaches one given enough time.

13·5 days agoI think it’s funny that there have been a bunch of stories about how genZ is smoking again because it’s some kind of nihilist counterculture and I’m just like… Yeah I didn’t quit smoking because the priest gave me a very stern lecture. I quit because I got tired of hacking up half a lung every morning.

Medicine@mander.xyz•A medical journal says the case reports it has published for 25 years are, in fact, fictionEnglish
92·7 days agoThis is kind of misleading, because the “journal” was specifically requesting fictionalized case studies for teaching purposes. This was made clear to authors, but perhaps not always to readers. This is pretty common and well known in medical literature, as a way to protect patient privacy, and is usually separated from more “hard case studies,” though it seems that this is not always clear in some contexts.
The issue here is that one of the stories was actually just entirely misinformation (about opiates and breastfeeding) rather than a fictionalized version of a real case. So the “fictionalized” case study journal is publishing clarification that the stories are embellished. The bigger note is that they didn’t actually do a full retraction of that actually bad paper, but seem to be “reminding” people that their case studies are fictionalized as a CYA move.

Parent your own kids and leave mine alone. I care more about the worms in my garden than what your kids do on the Internet.

12·9 days agoI admire your optimism. If Trump drops a smallish nuke on a remote reactor facility, we will get grave concern at best. The world has shown its hand already. It isn’t going to do shit, and nobody is coming to help us.
