3·11 days agoLike are similarly sized atoms more stable in a lattice?
Actually yes. That’s why you can’t arbitrarily add random elements into a crystal (well you can a little bit). If the geometries vary too greatly you introduce stresses into the lattice.

4·14 days agoDefinitely applies to climbing. Technically more expensive shoes may help with certain climbs, it certainly won’t help a beginner.
The main issue with the Linux CLI specifically is that all the tools have antiquated APIs. Inputs and outputs are all strings.
A modern CLI would be designed to take structured input and emit structured output. This would also provide better discoverability and reduce the chances of typos.

3·17 days agoI’d be curious what the values are. There’s a lot of variation based on how the plastic is formed and treated. E.g. abrasion causes a lot of shedding. It’s possible that heading and washing can also cause degradation.

9·17 days agoIt seems it’s more like cells can naturally produce substances that are detected as microplastics.
Also things like shredding from pipettes would almost certainly have been detected earlier given how ubiquitous they are in research.

52·24 days agoLike how they built a dam over a salt deposit and contaminated their water? How is this the western imperialists fault? I guess in the sense that the US allowed the current regime to rise to power.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Regular gym-goers probably avoid the gym on New Years Day because it's too crowded
1·27 days agoI think there’s usually going to be more bouldering gyms just because they’re easier to build.
In general over here in the western US we’ll use rock climbing to refer to both. Usually we’ll just say sport climbing, top rope, lead, to refer to rope climbs.

1·1 month ago$200k isn’t sufficiently rich:

Do people you know just not like their kids? Parents generally really like their offspring.
There’s definitely some biology involved. For example, women can forget the pain of childbirth.

1·1 month agoI think then it would be a good question to ask why families with 1 or 2 kids why they don’t have more.
I’d say the main reasons would be:
- Money: Even the most child friendly countries only cover a fraction of the cost of raising a child. As far as I’m aware, they might cover daycare, but that still leaves a ton of chores. And again, the standard might be you want to have a room per child, plus a guest room.
- Opportunity Cost: Taking leave will pause your career. Taking two years off in your 20s can really delay career growth, again leading to money issues down the line.
- Higher standards for marriage and stability: This might not be directly related to money, but maybe we can blame capitalism ruining everything including dating apps.
So governments might be able to move the needle a bit with these families by providing extra support.

2·1 month agoThe idea that people felt they have “comfortable income” to have 5 kids while working 6 days a week at a coal mine and living in a one bedroom apartment but can’t have kids today because they can’t put each one in separate room is just silly.
Is it though? The standards are much higher now and there’s a lot more effort put into raising each child. That’s literally a standard people have now.
A lot of people want to form a family. They want to have a kid or two.
Isn’t this my original point? I didn’t say everyone wanted to have an entire litter. There are plenty of people who want to have a family without sacrificing opportunity.

They’re sanctioned vessels, uninsured, and likely improperly registered (such as the Bella 1 which changed their flag to Russian but got seized anyways). And Panama has given permission to board (at least they did for that previous ship, but not sure about this one but I doubt they’d bother complaining).
So technically it is legal for the US to board these ships since they’re basically unflagged.
