  • Question: I do remember the days of those RSS buttons everywhere. But I never managed to see the value in it.

    Can anyone share their experience with following feeds, and how they consume this content? Is there some kind of spam/tracker free functionality that people enjoy? Are there apps out there that organize this in a way that changes the game?

    I’d like to give it another shot, sorry for all the questions.

  • I like your point that any feature has to be informed by what’s possible with the data available.

    I hoped that my proposal would take advantage of data already available from the Modlog, which is simply the number of actions taken by Mods/Admins.

    I also wanted to rely more on a metric that didn’t depend on user input/feedback to resist bot or group brigading.

    I suspect your workflow already is informally followed by Mods/Admins, and I’d like to refer to it as the Micro side of administration, when they go to a post in question trying to assess what’s going on based on comments surrounding a post. I too believe that helps spread the work, but also vibe checking’s negative cousin is essentially brigading.

    I don’t think there are easy answers in the Micro side, and much of it would be driven by existing rules and terms which seem clear enough as it is. I suspect most of the problem with Micro is just the work of assessing posts and exercising judgment.

    I’d rather explore the Macro side of the equation to focus on some available metrics, and what trends can be directed with what we already have.

  • If this were a terrible cake of mixed motives, one would be to throw out or damage the Epstein files in such a way that no one involved with those allegations can be tried.

    Second, obtain war funding (Venezeula) to secure a coup, or to at least hold a significant portion of the the US indefinitely.

    Third, in the event of complete failure, extort and move as much money out of the country that can resist tracing or recovery. Exit planning to leave the US on emergency basis.

    I keep these three points in mind while looking at the Trump Administration.

  • From what I understand, Venezuela, Canada, and Russia are the primary suppliers of heavy crude. Even after so-called embargoes against Russia for the Ukraine-Russia conflict, ghost ships are still able to get product to market.

    As for Iran, I’m not sure the US can even hold Iran, given their track record in Afghanistan and elsewhere. As it turns out, occupying another country requires huge troop deployments over decades.

    Also, China’s built out relations through the Belts and Roads Initiative, meaning they’ve diversified the markets they can access.

    One alternative plan, from an outsider’s point of view, is that the US has engaged in a long standing strategy of wealth transfer from its middle classes to its wealthy upper classes over decades. They’re in the process of breaking down their country for sale to its billionaire classes. While on paper it looks like a coup, the structure of the US suggests that the whole thing comes down with a whimper instead of a bang.

    I suspect the billionaires are just waiting to see if they can get away with stealing the US, without the American people rising up and charging them for treason.

  • Depends on your definition of “significant positive legacy”.

    If you’re drawn to the fame and notoriety of public figures as a template for this legacy, then I’d say these types of people already put their lives out in public for you to follow as a template. You will likely be seen as a narcissist in some circles.

    On the other hand, many games and thinkers instill the rationale that you are the sum of your choices. Your karma - or action logic perhaps - will ripple around you with consequences - intended or not. These choices raise a new legacy of being an example.

    A lot of people want to just live their lives in their own peace, make a living, do what they can to support their people. Such folks receive no fame, and no notoriety. They do everything necessary. There’s no thanks expected. But they make human life worth it. I’d rather be a part of this example.

    Together
    Everyone
    Accomplishes
    More

    In many ways, we all entered the same game with the same example of team. We all wake up, work, transit. Everything has to come together in order for us to get back home safely. It has inherent value, and is a “legacy”. What I think of as “legacy” is also your heritage and your birthright. You inherited someone’s legacy to be possible and to be here.

    There are forces that threaten this example. People who want to do violence to it, destroy it, pillage it, profit from it, you have to choose to protect it. They don’t want you to see your own worth. They don’t want you to see the value in others. They want you to stay small, and deny your heritage. How you protect this example, and the vulnerable, is up to you.

    EDIT: I’m just using the terms you and they in a generic sense. I don’t literally mean you to single any specific person out. Similarly, I’m not literally talking about “they” like some kind of secret cabal reference. They is an ever changing reference to any kind of opposing force - be it person or system or effect.

  • I watched the video included with the article. One of those poor, poor seniors was asked whether she was kept informed. She said no, saying she only gets updates from the internet and her Facebook.

    I’m not the first to ever say it, but there’s a clear lack of infrastructure when someone still turns to the very same company’s platform for updates and barely knows what’s going on. There’s no respect for community here, no involvement of stakeholders, no thought to the people who live there. For what? A corporate installation that may be built on fuddy duddy accounting to keep up appearances for an AI Bubble?

  • Late hours, on long stretches of road and away from intersections, walk down the centre of a street.

    You have better line of sight, fewer blind corners, and you should be picked up by cameras. As long as you’re not intoxicated, you can also tell when someone or something approaches better.

    Also a good pocket light with focus options. You can light the way with it, or blind anything temporarily. If built well, it can reinforce your fist, and you can hammer strike.

  • Thank you for that How-To. Now I know this isn’t what you first intended, but I tried to adapt this for DigitalOcean [DO] which is where my VPS is. I was not able to set up the CNAME, and I kind of worked out what was happening without a solution. For now I don’t have the CNAME set up and the links lead directly to my S3 Bucket.

    I’ve got my set up laid out at the bottom of the post here. I’ll ask there if it’s okay to just keep this arrangement or if there are concerns.

    Steps

    First, for DO, I had to install s3cmd as per this How-To

    https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/spaces/reference/s3cmd/

    Second, once s3cmd is set up, and configured, DigitalOcean has a default permission of private, and I had to make a policy to switch the default over to public. I configured the bucket policy with this How-To

    https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/spaces/how-to/configure-bucket-policies/

    What I noticed for DO, is that the bucket generates a folder of the same name of the bucket, and PieFed populates the folder. So for example:

    s3://your-super-unique-bucket-name/your-super-unique-bucket-name/communities s3://your-super-unique-bucket-name/your-super-unique-bucket-name/posts

    Third, I took your How-To for BackBlaze that you kindly provided and changed my pyfedi environment variables - in my case a docker

    https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/src/commit/8d8858fe386e32b4d1406251684ab4dc2bac782e/docs/Using Backblaze B2 with PieFed.md

    For DigitalOcean the region is not needed, and for illustrative purposes the region here is tor1 for the Toronto datacentre. Perhaps the only thing that doesn’t work quite right is uploading images.

    I’m currently here for now as the bucket is being used and all the images are displayed correctly.

    S3_BUCKET = 'your-super-unique-bucket-name'
    S3_ENDPOINT = 'https://your-super-unique-bucket-name.tor1.digitaloceanspaces.com/'
    S3_REGION = ''
    S3_PUBLIC_URL = 'https://your-super-unique-bucket-name.tor1.digitaloceanspaces.com/folder-name'
    S3_ACCESS_KEY = 'example004819c3ba9b31b0000000003'
    S3_ACCESS_SECRET = 'exampleK004Uei/7Vf90FzWuN3zoGl5npK3zZc'

    Why I didn’t finish the CNAME setting.

    For DigitalOcean, if I change the S3_PUBLIC_URL variable to ‘piefed-media.your.domain.here’, what happens is DO generates a new folder in the bucket. So what ends up happening is PieFed populates this new folder.

    s3://your-super-unique-bucket-name/piefed-media.your.domain.here/communities s3://your-super-unique-bucket-name/piefed-media.your.domain.here/posts

    PieFed still follows along with piefed-media.your.domain.here, and I was able to set up the CNAME as instructed. But I just wasn’t able to get things working as expected.

    Am I able to just keep things as is with links pointed directly at my bucket? Or is there some kind of concern with this set up.
