I’m wary of them and I refuse to use Fedora (because it’s basically their testing bed) due to their support of the US military, in addition to the reasons you’ve mentioned. Also, I’m trying my damnedest to #BoycottUSA
I prefer LMDE. It doesn’t check all my wants, but it finds a great balance and I don’t feel like an unpaid tester.
I mean I don’t, but it’s also been like a decade since I last borked my Linux install. Because I read instructions, and outputs, and don’t blindly copy-paste commands, etc. etc.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What home-cooked meal do you frequently make and still enjoy?English
4·7 个月前Tofu scramble, although it’s so far diverged from “standard” tofu scramble I’m not sure if I’d even call it that anymore. Basically, it’s crumbled tofu (firm or extra firm), fried potatoes (hash brown style), olives, bell peppers, onions, and tomato all thrown in a pan together and cooked on the stovetop. Seasoning is whatever the heck I feel like at the time, plus ketchup.

5·8 个月前I use Cinnamon but Gnome would be my second choice. I want to like Plasma, but every time I’ve used it there’s some glaring bug. Last I checked (few months back) font scaling caused fonts to look like absolute garbage. I found the bug online, tried all the “fixes”, no bueno.
I’m not going without scaling on a 14" 1080p screen.
Cinnamon and Gnome on the other hand: accessibility > large text. Easy. (Higher scaling factors can be found in font settings if needed).

(Sorry Scotland, you’re cool but also in a toxic relationship I can’t be around right now. I hope we can be friends again some day)

4·8 个月前What? No, consumption of it is NOT a grey area. Wtf?
I use LMDE because I’m lazy, cranky, and it just works.

I’m happy with my routine. Simple, quick.
For backing up my home folder, I just plug in my external drive and use rsync from the terminal, like so (change to your user name; mine is gecko. Double check the paths and edit as necessary)
rsync -av /home/gecko/ /media/gecko/media/emmahomebackup/ --delete --dry-run(test first, check for errors at the end of output, there shouldn’t be any unless you messed up the paths)then,
rsync -av /home/gecko/ /media/gecko/media/emmahomebackup/ --deleteThis command will back up your home folder the first time you run it, and on subsequent runs will sync any changes that have occured since the last run.
To restore, reverse the paths.
For backing up my system files (basically, everything outside of my home folder) I just use Timeshift.
Config files for programs are in hidden folders in ~ (as you discovered) OR in ~/.config OR in ~/.local/share (yeah it’s a bit of a mess)
Config files for flatpaks can be found under ~/.var/app (usually, some flatpaks have permissions to write outside that directory).
Just as my two cents, as a user - I like flatpaks because I can have up to date versions of certain applications on a more stable Debian base. I also like that application configs all go in one spot (~/.var/app/com.Example.example), and having granular permissions management per application. As for immutable distros, I’d happily use one if I wasn’t already getting all the stability I need from LMDE :)

1·10 个月前Cinnamon. I feel like it’s a nice middle ground between the minimalism of Gnome and the maximalism of KDE Plasma
