  • Bicycling and water jogging are both great but the former is far more accessible. Flat pedals are better if you’re injured/recovering since you can adjust your foot positioning (if clipless aren’t dialed in right you’re kinda locked in and can exacerbate injury, and if you don’t unclip in time you fall over). Padded gloves to keep vibration from aggravating things. I was in a boot for 6 months from a gnarly stress fracture but my doc cleared me for biking and I basically lived on a bike.

Also range of motion, biking helps for that since you’re constantly articulating your ankles and loosening up the ‘rust’. Trace the alphabet with your toes a couple times a day to stay on the up and up.

Check with doc ofc, and might help to get bloodwork so see if you’re deficient in anything and also see if there’s some root cause if you’re injury prone. Turns out I had a vitamin D deficiency so I started taking a ton of D+K2, couple years later I got back into running and building up mileage pretty realistically and went couch to 50k in 8 months, before that I was always getting injured. Not saying it’s specifically that, could be lots of things or nothing, but in my case I found that thing out and the sky was the limit afterwords. It’d be cool if it was some overlooked thing like that for you

  • I think a lot of perceived malice is secondary to his selfishness and utter disregard for anyone or anything outside his extremely small inner circle (and even then, he has no qualms shoving them out).

He’s the kind of guy that would forge his own grandma’s checks to have money for the casino. Not that his intent to hurt his grandma, how she feels is a thought that doesn’t enter his head. He just needs money and there’s money and that’s the extent of his capacity to empathize. If he gets caught he’ll lie or rationalize. He’s not the bad guy for doing it, they’re the bad people who caught him and made such a big deal out of it.

Basic sociopath. He did so many unquestionably immoral and illegal things but didn’t even think to keep his fingerprints off of everything. He doesn’t even think about how others would perceive him and thus doesn’t even make a half-assed attempt to cover his tracks.

Not to say he’s not intentionally malicious, but usually that’s aimed at victims after they speak out, because in his mind, they’re the bad guys. He can’t comprehend how others think, or even that people could think or behave differently than him, so he just assumes a whole lot of other people do the same exact stuff and feels like he’s being singled out. There’s a module in his brain that never got wired

  • Since you’re married, I consider the bar for ‘red flag’ to be quite a bit higher, but the answer to this depends on some missing context.

It’s only a red flag if they have unreasonable expectations to the point that it’s harmful to either of you, and they aren’t willing to entertain the notion that the problem might not actually be the perceived lack of attention/companionship but rather the unreasonable amount they’re expecting.

Healthy relationships are founded on vulnerability, emotional intimacy, selflessness, being able to have real candid discussions on problems and come together to work towards a solution. It’s not that healthy relationships are always devoid of unhealthy things, it’s that the parties are willing to come together and fix the bad stuff.

That said, it’s not a red flag if they’re feeling this way due to totally unreasonable expectations, even if they’re convinced that the expectations are very reasonable, just so long as they’re able to acknowledge that your feelings matter too and that this is causing strife and it’s something they’re willing to at least try to find some sort of compromise or middle ground.

And it’s definitely not a red flag if they have very reasonable expectations by anyone’s standards and they simply aren’t being met.

But boil it down and the only red flag is if they or you would rather build a trench between you two rather than coming to the table willing to discuss how to navigate through it

  • I actually blocked most of those groups but one was some climate community on another instance. There was a post where someone asked what they could do personally to help prevent climate change, and it was full of political theory as a response.

Someone said they actively boycott Starbucks because the CEO flies a jet in order to commute to Seattle to California, and if the government won’t do anything they felt like the least they can do is just commit to never giving them and their lobbyists a single penny ever again.

And they were downvoted to like -20 and had a dozen people attacking them over shifting the blame from the corporations to the working class by framing it in such a way that the working class should have any responsibility for the actions of the corporation. It was like watching a bunch of picketers calling someone a scab.

And I’m just reading it like “what the fuck guys, you’re sitting around discussing political strategies that have so far done absolutely nothing, they’re doing something, they have a point, the lobbyists make the laws, so defunding the lobbyists does make a lot of sense. He’s flying in a jet to work because people give him money, helllLLLOOOooo.”

Someone even went so far as to argue that a lot of people need to go to Starbucks because they might need a quiet space to study or hang out, so I jumped in pointing out that most municipalities have a library at the minimum, and people were fine before coffee shops were everywhere, and I got downvoted and jumped on by half a dozen people for not understanding the plight of others.

Homeless people need somewhere to go, so I’m an asshole for suggesting that other people could go to Starbucks less? Beats the hell out of me

In some climate forum, for no reason other than to win a stupid internet argument over the responsibility of emissions, everyone began defending the necessity of Starbucks of all things. Seriously. And at the same time, consumers shouldn’t have to endure hardships for the climate because they should instead focus on affecting policy, in order for places like Starbucks to change, because they’re fucking horrible. In my mind I was just like “well are corporations good or bad, or at the moment are they just convenient as both in order to use that person as a punching bag?” but noped right out.

It was basically a rat’s nest of tangled up incongruent statements that all led back to ‘fuck that person for saying they make a very small effort to do something towards a corporation as opposed to attempting to reshape politics’

    So yeah, shit like that.

Maybe a simple “while I disagree with A due to B, it does have some merit because of C. But in my opinion I think D is more effective, and if you’d like to learn more about D, here are some resources! :)”

  • A lot of communities on Lemmy have a ‘scene kid’ subculture and they will just harass people right off the platform for not being true enough to the cause, despite being for the cause.

You got a bunch of raindrops. They want to become a hurricane. They simply need a warm breeze but shit blows sideways instead. The corners of Lemmy where movements could be happening are basically mosh pits

I’m not trying to argue with you or correct you or anything, just pointing out why this is bad, how it shouldn’t be as it is, but it’s on deaf ears to the people I’m lamenting about. And you’re correct, a 2nd Reddit would suck, but Lemmy could be better if those people were being better.

If there’s anything anyone mad about anything in the world should know, by know, don’t attack people on the same team, welcome them in

You actually don’t become a former gifted child, you become a gifted adult. Feeling things with intensity set to 11, perceiving little nuances that make people unsettled, shit’s rough. And then you turn 37 and realize you don’t owe shit to anyone and you’re finally freed. You aren’t some marionette built to do tricks to show how smart you are. But people still think you’re weird as fuck because you still figured out and finessed the game and you work in a warehouse and have 4 houses or something dumb like that. But you’re finally at peace and you can do anything from hanging drywall to modyfing a BIOS and you just quit trying to showcase it

  • Getting up every day and choosing in each instance to be not just shitty, but a nazi

These people are getting up every morning and all they see are comments downplaying and explaining why it shouldn’t be taken literally. They turn on their favorite ‘news’ station which ignores the obvious and latches onto sensationalized nothingburgers and conjecture. Reality to them is an entirely different thing. They can’t see the forest for the trees. Everyone around them is telling them not to look. They step in a little too far and get caught in the undertow.

But this far right bullshit is happening all over the world, started happening as soon as everyone wound up with a phone in their pocket, and it often gets traced back to Russian interference and influence.

And the dumber it sounds, the more credence it gets, because it drives the other half up the fucking wall. Beetles are what’s causing the Canada wildfires, hurricane machines, Haitians eating cats and dogs, normal ass people are not letting these things become things organically
