Learn an instrument! An hour of noodling a day will get you to pretty good quite quickly. An hour of real, hard practice, doing etudes, drills, and scales will make you a virtuoso one day.

Cognitive dissonance is the emotion disruption caused by internal inconsistencies, not necessarily the inconsistencies themselves. Making peace with them is important for our own sanity. If you don’t have any strong emotions, I would probably say there’s no cognitive dissonance. I’m not a vegan either.

People eat meat and love animals. Veganism is perfectly healthy and doesn’t require killing creatures just as intelligent and loving as their dogs and cats in order to have adequate and delicious nutrition.

If you disagree passionately with the above statement, like it gives you real feelings of frustration, congratulations, you are experiencing cognitive dissonance.

But they are all disagreeing, scoffing at each other with “akshully” statements about things they don’t understand.

It takes me 2 hours to travel by bus where it takes me 30 minutes by car in my city. I can’t afford to drive so I cycle. Badly planned routes by for profit bus companies is not how to create a useful transit service.

The real kicker is that the same company does the buses in the neighboring cities with more social clout and they are really good and win awards. People with cars there bus most of the time. They know how to make a good bus network. They choose not to. Our city has more people, even, but they alienated the drivers so thoroughly, it would take a generation of completely overhauled good service to rebuild a trusting ridership base beyond the desperately poor. They’ve built themselves this super expensive problem just to save a few bucks 40 years ago.

Internet moderation needs to be performed dispassionately. It’s administration, not leadership. But still, it appeals to power-tripping, self important assholes who have no interest in curating a functional community but instead ensuring everyone thinks and acts exactly like they do. The larger lemmy gets, the more of these awful moderators make up the moderation team. There is no mechanism in place to prevent this. I don’t even know how such sa mechanism would work, but as soon as one is figured out, the Internet will be a better place.

Unwordly Americans like to pretend people think of the US as the best country in the world. They think this because they have never spoken to someone from outside the US except for the Mexicans they persecute, so they have an empty canvas to fill with all kinds of wild notions.

Politicians are generally worldly enough to know it’s not true, but that doesn’t win elections.

I exclusively browse on mobile and their app sucks. The API changes were the last straw, but I was slowly on the way out the door anyway. The bigger an online community gets, the more it will resemble your average online community. The average online community is a toxic mess. Reddit is so big, even the niche little weirdo run subreddits weren’t the same anymore. It looked like reddit but felt like Facebook.
