Fediverse@lemmy.world•Does Mastodon bring anything of value to a Lemmy user?English
8·1 month agoI personally don’t like microblogging platforms in general. It’s cool that there’s an alternative to twitter and the like, but I just have no pull towards platforms that emulate that kind of environment.
I think it’s great that it’s so popular and has introduced a lot of people to the fediverse and spread awareness of ethical alternatives to corporate slop, but is not for me.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Seeing NSFW post titles just makes me want to respond to them neutrally.English
4·2 months agoAny intentional choice made to capture human attention functions as an algorithm.
For instance, when a creator posts an intentionally silly title, it triggers a predictable urge in users to comment on that silliness. This deliberate cause-and-effect cycle means the creator’s strategy itself is the engagement-driving algorithm. A good example of this human-designed system is ragebaiting which systematically uses manufactured outrage to multiply views and comments

Hmmmm.

112·2 months agoThis is actually great!
Social media sites should do this. There’s never a good reason to be on [Insert Corporate Slop Social Media Website here] at 3AM.

Spore@pawb.social•"I was given that opportunity to go crazy and do something kind of insane" - Will Wright and Maxis look back on nine years making SporeEnglish
2·2 months agoSpore was my hyperfixation for a good long while. It was off-beat, quirky, had an eccentric personality and was completely different than anything else out there and the creature creator was absolutely amazing. It was everything that a popular mainstream game wasn’t, which is exactly the reason why no profit-driven business would fund something like it. Nowadays, even if something is profitable, if the margin is big enough, it’s considered a flop. I am convinced though, that unfortunately for Spore, SecuROM is the reason it saw no future.

New Communities@lemmy.world•Ask Vegans now has a Lemmy community!English
111·2 months ago“How do you know someone’s not a vegan? They’ll tell a vegan.”
I appreciate that! I’m not sure which communities I could cross-post cel-damage content to, but I like that that’s a native feature.
I used to watch it every Sunday morning before church when I was a wee lad. The whole show is available on YT btw

movies@piefed.social•What are some movies you can suggest going into blind?English
3·2 months agoAgreed. If I don’t want to watch a movie I’ll just watch the trailer to get a summary of the entire dang plot

Since I’ve stopped watching trailers / reading synopses etc. my enjoyment of most any movie has shot up exponentially

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Would AI Be Hated As Much If It Wasn't As Resource Intensive?English
23·2 months agoAny good thing is ruined once it’s co-opted by capitalism.
AI and LLMs (In my very very personal and completely subjective opinion) is the coolest shit humanity has ever invented and under the right system would’ve been unanimously celebrated.
But noooooooo, capitalism had to go and fucking turn a miraculous tool for human creativity and knowledge into a relentless driver of layoffs, corporate slop and copyright theft because some greedy fucks want more money for themselves than they know what to do with.
But, well, that’s just, like, my opinion, man.
I appreciate the heads-up, and honestly the original reddit community was pretty much completely dead as well, so I’m not really expecting much to come of it. I’m mainly creating this and some other communities here because there are subreddits dedicated to them, but since I don’t want to use reddit I’m creating them here instead. Whether they’re much busier if at all is not an expectation for me, i’d just like to centralize my communities here moving forward -

Im on both loops and pixelfed but would like something like this as well.
