I fell off the webcomic train after Google reader died but girl genius is still going! I just checked lol. Schlock mercenary ended in 2020, I think OOTS is also active.
His Bluesky account is really fun too. Talks a lot about some of the deep lore of Popeye (like stuff that hasn’t been seen since the Thimble Theater days) and how that informs his strips.
Freefall, as others have said. Dan and Mab’s Furry Adventures is still kicking, if struggling. Schlock Mercenary finished a few years ago if you never finished reading it, and Housepets finished up just a short while ago. El Goonish Shive is still going strong and is pretty good. Girl Genius is doing as well as ever. Two Kinds is still alive, and XKCD of course. Out-of-Placers is not from that era but I want to promote it and I’ll call that my one freebie for the post.
Dresden Codak. Gunnerkrigg Court. El Goonish Shive. All of which have weird front pages right this moment, if you have no context.
And XKCD, of course.
Three Panel Soul is just barely updating. I haven’t checked Johnny Wander in forever. Both sprang out of Mac Hall.
Extra Ordinary is about a decade newer than QC. Dumbing Of Age technically started around the same time, but it’s kind of a killing-the-wizard reboot for all of Willis’s prior characters, e.g. from It’s Walky and Shortpacked.
None that come to mind tbh. It’s been around for a REALLY long while and most of its contemporaries have either stopped long ago or aren’t very good anymore/never was…
A lot of the ones that stopped hold up to this day, though, such as Goats; Scenes From A Multiverse (both by Jon Rosenberg); Octopus Pie (Meredith Gran) and others I’m currently blanking on
Cat and Girl still gets me, but I mean, it’s kind of a niche kind of comic. Not everyone loves a philosophical meta-narrative in every comic.
Dorothy Grambell just always had a vibe that I felt viscerally of feeling talented and thoughtful, but also feeling like a total mess that most people wouldn’t really want to know personally.
While we’re not-talking about that asshole… starting a webcomic is like one-in-ten odds for being trans, right? It’s a bigger tell than buying a stuffed shark.
Real Life was a surprise. Dresden Codak, not so much.
What other good webcomics from that era are still around and still good[1]? I fell off of so many for so long.
We don’t talk about what happened to SinFest. ↩︎

Something Positive is still around, and still pretty great. Dude who draws that also does the Popeye newspaper strip.
Wait, Randy Milholland does Popeye now?? How the fuck did THAT happen‽ 😂
I’m not sure, but his strips are really good.

Never really been a big Popeye fan myself, but I loved Something Positive back in the day so I’ll for sure check out Randy’s take on it!
freefall is a good one thats still active :3 (i love the old webpage the best, simple html is best html !!)

What do you mean? “Unicorn hair in my egg” is entirely self-explanatory.
After looking through what is now a very sad bookmark folder since so many just don’t even exist anymore:
Misfile
Girls with Slingshots
Between Failures
Those used to be on my daily check and read rotation before falling off the webcomic wagon.
Girls with Slingshots was so good!
I like Sluggy Freelance.

Dumbing of age is still going.
Real life comics hasn’t been updated in like two years.
