I think part of the answer is transient bottlenecks and a backward propagation of the traffic waves they create. They’re caused when a large number of cars merge onto the freeway at an onramp, slowing down the right two lanes; when some jerk cuts someone off, causing a momentary slowdown; when there’s something interesting on the side of the road that people decelerate slightly to look at. Of course, actual bottlenecks obviously cause a backup as well.

whosepoopisonmybutt@sh.itjust.worksto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•After 2 years on Lemmy, I finally installed it this weekend.17·7 days agoThis weekend, I gave my girlfriend’s dad a nice computer with Linux mint installed. I put a shortcut to windows 11 setup to run in virtualbox, in case there were things that he felt he needed windows for (to spare him the frustration of needing to tinker too much if he didn’t want to).
Down with Microsoft spyware.

I think that should be enough money for him to keep his arrogance on the shelf.

Windows 11 is enshitified enough to be annoying and loaded with government and corporate spyware enough to be alarming. Meanwhile, Linux has become user friendly, optimized for everything but the latest hardware and capable of running most games.

I can see how it’s nice to have a more modern car but I just can’t justify all the expenses. I’d rather retire sooner.
Janky but if it works, it works.
whosepoopisonmybutt@sh.itjust.worksto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Even households earning $150,000 a year are struggling with credit card and car paymentsEnglish1·1 month agoOh, I just checked and I was wrong. I pay $61/month to Progressive for liability on a >20 year old small pickup truck in California. $100k per person, $300k per accident, in case I crash into a pile of Ferraris or something.
The liability is $50/month but uninsured motorist insurance is most of that additional $11.
I’m paying for insurance in case I get hit by someone who doesn’t have insurance? Ridiculous.
whosepoopisonmybutt@sh.itjust.worksto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Even households earning $150,000 a year are struggling with credit card and car paymentsEnglish2·1 month agoThat’s wild. I pay less than $500 a year for like $100k in liability insurance. Maybe I’m just old and have a good record.
Do you have tickets?
whosepoopisonmybutt@sh.itjust.worksto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Even households earning $150,000 a year are struggling with credit card and car paymentsEnglish2·1 month agoEven about 25 years ago, $1000 would get you a car without major cosmetic damage but it’d have a couple hundred thousand miles on it. You can still get that for around $3k today. I see them on craigslist right now. Where I live, minimum wage has increased 2.5x since then.
There’s your beater for roughly the same number of minimum wage hours worked.

Liability insurance should be like $50/month.
Your estimates seem quite high to me.
And that the majority of that output is being hoarded by those who already have far more than they can ever use.

Although he is amusing for his great width, he doesn’t have a very robust backstory. The character lacks depth.
Bill and Ted were a parody of 90s SoCal culture. Nobody was that ridiculous unironically.
