Well, I mean, there is a lack of privacy. That’s kind of how the platform exists architecturally. I just don’t find that to be a problem, per se. It’s a social platform, which makes sense to me for everything on the protocol to be “open” to one degree or another. Not everything has to be securitymaxxed.

You are on the right path. Most stuff people self host requires very little horsepower. Most of your CPU will be idle in the end. Things might get expensive if you want to add a lot of storage, but the good news is that can be added later as you need it. I think you’ll be surprised just how much a modern-ish laptop can host.

I love the Dells I use. They’re wonderful little workhorses, and I got a pretty good deal as they used to mine chia cryptocurrency.

I’m fully in favor of using the power of the state to regulate AI data centers so that they’re not exploitative to local resource limitations. I’m fully in favor of rewriting copyright law from the ground up for the modern era, to the extent that I think copyright should exist at all. I’m in favor of researching model-human interactions and assessing well-being of users and coming up with some forms of agency-respecting safeguards. I’m more than fully in favor of reigning in billionaire corporations whose only motive is profit and taxing the ever-loving shit out of them.

What I’m not in favor of us restricting the technology as a whole or acting like its use or even its very existence is a moral failure. I’m not in favor of stripping agency from adults because you think you know what’s best for them.

Entropy reduction. I do a lot of development work and need Visual Studio to work. It’s a complex beast already, and I don’t need to deal with the headache of fighting some activation hack or running the risk that some DLL or feature is gimped and causes weird behavior in an inactivated state.

I finally made the switch to Mint recently. My day to day experience is so much better. I set up a fresh Windows VM so I could keep using a few programs that don’t play well with wine, and even having to purchase a new activation key for it was totally worth it to have it segregated out from my day to day. And I’d guess that not all that many people really need the specialty stuff I do.

Do a little research on what you use daily and/or can’t live without, but I can confirm that it isn’t as complicated as you might think.
