I miss atom, when it was discontinued I tried vscodium and immediately hated it, then used kate for a while, and now use neovim. neovim is nice but atom was just so good

Linux@lemmy.ml•Are there any other display servers aside from Wayland and X11 with its forks?
9·3 days agoThere was W, which came before X but I don’t think any copies of it or even authentic screenshots of it are available on the internet.
what confuses me is that i have heard so many people talking about this community but i have never seen it. does lemmy.world block it or something?
not accurate

Linux@lemmy.ml•[SOLVED] How to set resolution to a portion of a screen or just screen share part of one?
13·22 days agoUse OBS to capture your screen and manipulate it however you want and then use its virtual camera feature as your webcam for the meeting. If you want both your face and screen you could easily do a facecam in the corner in obs

Linux@lemmy.ml•Modest laptop arriving, what new Linux distribution should I try?
7·27 days agoI bought an old laptop to install libreboot on and I’ve been messing with Gentoo. I see the appeal now that I’ve tried it. It took me a couple days to compile librewolf but assuming your laptop isnt from 2013 I imagine things would build a lot faster for you
I’ve never been to england but I know curry is a big thing there and curry massively outranks every food in the comic

For games, just about anything that isnt intentionally made to not work in wine works. For other things, it really depends on the program. You can usually look up online if anyone has gotten your specific program to work unless its really obscure

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•OpenSUSE is better than rolling release, cutting edge Arch
8·2 months agoOpenSUSE will almost certainly feel slower and heavier than Arch on any given hardware. Zypper is way way way slower than pacman, more stuff is installed out of the box, and at least personally I see a lot of slowdowns due to BTRFS doing various maintenance. There are a lot of great reasons to use OpenSUSE, I’ve been using Tumbleweed on my desktop for years, but this is not one of them.
A couple days ago I heard the horrifying sentence “I asked chatgpt to generate a secure password for the laptops” from someone returning a cart full of laptops they borrowed. Does your browser not have a built in password generator? Does your password manager not have a built in password generator? Could you not find a single password generator online?

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•When you accidentally say "folder" instead of "directory" in a Linux group.
3·2 months agoI fairly sure I’ve seen various *nix tools call it super, meta, and hyper. I think super is the most correct but I’ve seen all three

Linux@lemmy.ml•Audacity 4.0 beta lets you test its new (and much nicer) Qt interface
3·2 months agoWell if we want non-foss examples, look at windows 11 and modern macos. Flat design is clearly finally starting to fall out of style

Linux@lemmy.ml•Audacity 4.0 beta lets you test its new (and much nicer) Qt interface
53·2 months agoWith how many people are excited for oxygen and air’s revival I doubt I’m alone in thinking the new design is really ugly compared to the old one

This had better be a currency where 70 thousand of it is worth like 30 USD
i hope its wired up to the real one so it just turns on and off seemingly randomly like on all old cars

Yeah, but a lot less of the plugins are maintained now and teletype is gone
