2·4 months agoA big part of the plan was that in addition to reducing car usage, the revenues collected by congestion pricing would be used to make huge investments in improving public transit, thereby reducing car dependencey even further. Win-win!

This is a strawman argument. 300 mile trips are better suited for trains.
Better for people with physical handicaps
The majority of physical disabilities prevent people from driving, resulting in a loss of mobility and freedom when they do not have viable alternatives. Many people who do not bike for transport and do not talk to people who bike for transport see a handicap parking spot and assume that everybody with a handicap drives.
People cycling and using public transit free up road space for the minority of people with handicaps who drive. I know two utilitarian cyclists with disabilities who cannot drive but use a bicycle as their primary means of transportation.
Can be more easily/comfortably used in extreme weather
Wear a jacket. Many of us go for walks in extreme weather. There are very cold and hot countries all over the world that have high rates of bicycle usage for transport. The problem usually lies in cities designing and maintaining their roads in a hostile way to all forms of transportation other than bicycles in the winter. Look at Montreal and Oulu for counter-examples. Even the Netherlands gets constant rain.

It’s the law where I live too, but I have never seen it enforced or even heard of it being enforced before until reading your comment.
I wouldn’t even call it an experiment since it has been successfully implemented in London, Singapore (since 1975!), San Diego, Milan, Stockholm, and other cities.

How often do you see drivers roll stop signs or rush amber lights? When’s the last time you drove at or below the speed limit for an entire trip? I constantly hear drivers complaining about cyclists who pose no danger to drivers, meanwhile the drivers continue to exceed the speed limit, roll stop signs, and be one of the leading causes of death in this country despite having fully dedicated infrastructure everywhere.
Where I live, drivers continue to use the bike lane to turn right and for parking despite having a dedicated roadway. It kills and injures multiple people every year. The point being there are people who incorrectly use the existing infrastructure regardless of their mode of transport.
The difference is that bike routes in cities are incomplete and often have unsafe, pothole-riddled gutters with a painted line next to it as an excuse for infrastructure. People prioritise their safety even if that means not using a poorly designed bike lane.
Can we stop it with the low effort dunks?
