squirrel
I’m a squirrel. The german word for squirrel is Eichhörnchen, which is hard to pronounce for english speakers. The english word for Eichhörnchen is squirrel, which is hard to pronounce for german speakers. And I think that’s beautiful :)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do you prefer the Fediverse over other Social Media?English
19·5 days agoA couple of things come to mind:
- More public institutions need to be on Mastodon or similar microblogging services, so they can publish public service announcements openly via Fediverse and RSS for everyone to read
- More video creators and public broadcasters need to publish their videos or mirror their channels to PeerTube/Loops etc.
- More donations or funding in general for fediverse developers and instance admins
- More enthusiasts who post about their niche interests in niche communities on Lemmy/PieFed/Mbin

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do you prefer the Fediverse over other Social Media?English
57·5 days agoIt’s smaller and friendlier, no ads, no big tech, non-commercial, open source and I can host my own instance on a potato that connects me to people all around the globe.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•If I have some spare compute, are there ways I can use it to help an existing fediverse instance?English
23·5 days agoYou could run a PeerTube instance to mirror other people’s videos. The more mirrors, the more decentralized it gets. But it takes some manual curation of videos or instances you want to mirror.
This subreddit
change that into “this community”
Big idea

Open Source@lemmy.ml•YSK some unconventional ways you can contribute to OpenStreetMapEnglish
8·12 days agoKeep in mind, too, that you can add as much or as little data as you want. If you want to map the species name of every tree, feel free; if you want to trace over a building and just call it a “building” with no other details, that’s helpful too. So don’t get intimidated; it’s about what you can do, not what you can’t.
Thanks for this! I wanted to add a public ping pong table a couple weeks ago but got overwhelmed by all the data fields in Vespucci. I didn’t want to submit an incomplete dataset, but couldn’t figure out which additional fields are needed. Next time I’ll just submit it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Will Piefed ever be ported to Go language instead of Python?English
14·13 days agoWhy don’t you do it?
Exactly. Fork it, make GoFed, extend the Fediverse. That’s how open source works.

401·14 days agoWith all the drama lately, I had many moments where I thought this can’t be good for your health. It isn’t good for mine, that’s why I didn’t engage in the threads and focused on more positive things. Most of Threadiverse development and conversation is way more positive, but the drama can paint it in a different light if you’re deep in it. PieFed has brought so much joy to so many of us and continues to do so. Thank you for all your work. I hope you can find some peace in all this.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your thoughts on internet trollingEnglish
3·15 days agoBefore most trolling became toxic, there was the variant of light trolling which was nice and very fun. I remember one person presenting a talk at a hacker conference about trolling, but all they did was talking about trolling as in fishing… for the whole talk. It was a nice way to waste everyone’s time.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What brought you to the Fediverse?English
3·15 days agoI’m using it to track what books I’ve read and to discover new books to read by following others. But you can also create read later lists, write and read reviews, rate books, comment on others reviews or status updates. Also, every time a book isn’t available on Bookwyrm I enjoy to enter the metadata and make it available for everyone.

18·15 days agoI created a Mastodon account in 2022 when Musk took over Twitter, but wasn’t really active there. When Reddit closed down their API in 2023 I started using Lemmy daily. Now I’m on Mastodon, Lemmy, PieFed, PeerTube, Bookwyrm and more. Love the fediverse!
