I’ve been looking for th8s for awhile too.
Not a locally run tool, but a self hosted web app (that I wire up to my self hosted db) that has a web portal I login to, and then can manage my db with a nice slick UI to define tables, relations, etc.
There’s been some I’ve found but they vastly lacked basic features and were clearly in very early beta.
The #1 thing Ive used AI for is commenting my code. It is pretty good at following my format and generating code documentation, based on my existing code.
It’s also really good at helping me think of a good name for something, if there’s a specific word on the tip of my tongue. “Whats the word for when you do the thing with the thingy?” “It sounds like you are looking for (word)”
Also its really good for helping me find the name of specific algorithms for use cases.
“Is there a known algorithm I can look up that can fenangle a dinger?”
“You might be looking for the Ferg Dergeson Flemming algorithm, which is a popular way to fenangle dingers”
Then Ill look it up and it is, indeed, like the best way to fenangle a dinger and I’m like “well holy shit, this is a solved problem turns out, I shoulda known”
I use Hugo, it’s not super complicated.
You basically just define templates in pseudo html for common content (header, nav panel, footer, etc), and then you write your articles in markdown and Hugo combines the two and outputs actual html files.
You also have a content folder for js, css, and images which get output as is.
That’s about all there is to it, it’s a pretty minimalist static site generator.
Hosting wise you can just put it on github pages for free.
Yeah this is just noticeable because most products weren’t even resealable, they just expected you to seal em yourself with a clip, twist em, put em in a container, etc.
Now they are adding cheap resealable zips to the bag, which is nice in theory but the bag material has to be strong enough to support it.
Actual ziplock baggies themselves are made of thick plastic that can take a bit of abuse.
But cheap paper plastic hybrid materials a chip bag us made of can’t handle that sort of load, so it becomes the fail point.

Architecture as code is amazing, being able to completely wipe your server, re-install fresh, and turn it on and it goes right back to how it was is awesome.
GitOps version controlled architecture is easy to maintain, easy to rollback, and easy to modify.
I use k8s for my entire homelab, it has some initial learning curve but once you “get it” and have working configs on github, it becomes so trivial to add more stuff to it, scale it up, etc.
My understanding is risk is low on this one as we already have a prepared and tested vaccine, and we have a known medicative treatment.
So it’d suck if it spreads but we at least have the tools to fight it on hand.
Lasse is the original maintainer of XZ, they have been placed back in their position as sole maintainer.
“Jia Tan” was the person who slipped the backdoor into XZ and is now banned.
Lasse has already fixed abd removed the backdoor.
XZ itself is critical software everyone uses (its one of the main compression/decompression programs used on linux)
but the best way to avoid getting them is still to just avoiding stupid shit.
This is fine and dandy on a personal pc, but in a work environment you are now being actively targeted by malicious actors if your company is a good target.

So once you are in that zone you do need some fast acting reactive tools that keep watch for viruses.
For casual users I typically recommend using Cinnamon Desktop, it’s the most Windows-esque UI and will be the easiest for them to pick up and use.
I roll with Cinnamon on Ubuntu and it’s been extremely painless, very simple to get stuff do and shit just works.
This by a long shot, I agree.
What CLI tools do you find have install problems on Powershell?
Everything I’ve used can be installed “headless”, often using winget now.
But powershell just sucks and windows file system is cumbersome, so limux is still better.
So far any use case I’ve solved with just SSH.
What specifically do you need to rdp in for?
They genuinely looked identical to me.
Either way, gogs dies what I need it to, git server for backing up my code and super basic git web Hooks to trigger my build server.
Couldn’t ask for anything more.
Gogs and Gitea are very similiar, Gitea is a fork of Gogs with a bit more features as I understand it.
However when I tried to get Gitea working personally a year and a half ago, it had some rough issues with redirect looping onto itself infinitely, could never get it to work.
On the other hand Gogs didn’t have this issue, and was much more painless to stand up, so it’s what I use now.
I was able to connect to the DB with Cloudbeaver, but it straight up wasn’t providing the diagram tab in the way the picture said it outta. The example pic even specifically is using a postgres DB as its example!
I pretty much had the exact same view, but no diagram tab. Unfortunately the wiki article doesn’t go into much detail, it just says:
“(if the tab is not presented then the object does not support the diagram presentation)”
With no information provided further listing off what is, and is not, supported for diagram presentation.
Lack of documentation it seems, which is unfortunate. It seemed like it has potential but I spent a good 20 minutes fiddling with it, trying different configurations and settings, nothing made it start working and it seems like (as is the case on a few of these tools) the ERD tooling is often a bit of an afterthought and poorly supported.
Many of the tools are sql first, ERD… third? fourth? forgotten and lacking most features :(
I have no idea how to respond to this. I wrote up a few attempts but it just felt weird.
Why do you think I need to explain what ERD stands for, in the context of my question?
Trying it out, the wiki says it has an ERD editor, but its documentation is kind of lacking.

Shows it interacting with a postgres database, but when I try the same I am not getting a Diagram tab. Its also proving to be pretty awkward to try and work with.
So far best I have found is Azimutt, which is pretty close to what I want but its interface is lacking atm, and I couldnt get it to successfully connect to my postgres database in the end (kept giving NOT FOUND errors even though I tested inside the docker image to validate the connection and it could indeed TCP the postgres database’s port)
Let me know what specific questions you have that my post did not cover and I can try and help out.
I feel like I specified exactly what I am looking for and even gave some examples of existing (non self hosted) tools, so not sure what else to add.
Are you familiar with what an ERD is, with respect to database management?
Have you used tools like Luna/Moon, Navicat, Visual Paradigm, etc?
Im looking for such a tool, but self hosted via docker in the form of a Web App.
One vehicle delivering 2 peoples food is better than 2 people driving out to get food, tbh.
Overall delivery drivers substantially reduce traffic.
For more deliverable stuff like packages, 1 delivery truck delivery 40 peoples packages in one trip us so much better than 40 individual households all driving to Walmart or whatever.
I am fine with the majority of traffic just being delivery vehicles and public transit, those are the two actually effective uses for vehicles at the public level.
