I am pretty sure USA Democrates are closer to EU moderate right, they are not the left as we consider it in EU (except for Bernie Sanders maybe). So you should probably include those too.
I try to contribute to things getting better, sometimes through polite rational skepticism.
Disagreeing with your comment ≠ supporting the opposite side, I support rationality.
Let’s discuss to refine the arguments that make things better sustainably.
Always happy to question our beliefs.

Electoral college is weird AF
I think it’s less unique than people think. In France, there is an electoral college specifically for the Sénat, which is a secondary legislative chamber compared to the Assemblée Nationale. They can amend law proposals after they are submitted by the Assemblée, but in case of conflicts, it’s the Assemblée that decides.
The college is made of people locally elected in various types of previous local elections. I think part of the reasons for this system is to have a representation of every locations that is not only proportional to the population. For example to prevent populated areas from dictating laws to unpopulated areas that don’t make sense for their local circumstances (typically around urbanism and transportation).
Why would you get down voted for that on a leftist forum?
Some Hexbear users wished to some French instances users to get more Charlie Hebdo events.
No need to go right actually, even defending social democrate values may attract intolerant leftists on some instances.
My point is that there is a infinity of nuance between the far left and trumpist, but too many extreme leftists tend to consider anything right of them as far right, therefore forbidding discussion that doesn’t 100% go their preferred way. This is part of what makes a big chunk of Lemmy unwelcoming.
Agreed, basically if you are moderate, you have to block 2 or 3 major instances to escape from extremist content. That’s very unwelcoming for new users.
What a perfect example of what the top comment meant. “You either 100% agree with us or you are a trumpist/fascist/nazi”, no in-between, no nuance, no moderation allowed.
The default web interface is very poorly designed and looks uninviting.
Disagree. I find it rather clean and functional, even on mobile. Maybe because I liked old reddit. Maybe younger people are used to Instagram-like feeds so they don’t like the compact forum style.
Reminds me of some French women who voted for Macron because he married a woman 25 years older than him (formerly his highschool literature teacher).
Let’s rejoin as full members and all of that bullshit will have allowed progress at the end.
I have seen it happen with old trees, but I think now they have either species or techniques to avoid that. Trees in streets are very common in France, it’s not a recent thing. There’s even a specific term for streets with trees: “avenue”, although many people use it without knowing.
Well, yeah nobody would thought to destroy this kind of valuable architecture for parking. We did get some aweful towers in other districts though, like Montparnasse tower.
This is Haussmannien architecture, it looks pretty and unfiform because the prefect of Napoleon III in the 19th century got the permission to destroy most of the shitty medieval districts with poor people inside and build good looking housing with modern accomodations for rich people instead. That’s largely why Paris is pretty today.
I’ve never heard of anyone getting ticks from street vegetation. You would typically not walk through it unless you’re a rat. What’s your species?
Street trees are trimmed regularly in France when it’s needed. People enjoy to see the green and the added privacy when it reaches their windows.
It’s made to look like that on purpose, but it’s kept. It’s the counter reaction to the biodiversity disaster of loan monoculture style like you often see in USA suburbs. I actually enjoy the feeling of wilderness.
There are also other nations like India staying “neutral” in the war in Ukraine so they can profit from it by buying Russian oil at a cheaper price while maintaining their good economical relationships with Western countries
Because it participates in keeping an old laptop fast and up to date.
Moldova had elections a few days ago.
Yes to the EU process vs Russia influence barely won with 50.46% and the current pro-EU president was reelected with 54.35% against a candidate supported by the “pro-Russian Socialist Party”.
So apparently, democracy is not a consensual topic in this country, which aligns well with Trump.
