FWIW voter participation DID drop pretty catastrophically. Only around 44% - a drop in turnout of nearly 15%. And combined with the fact that all the other non-satirical parties skipped the election, Farage’s whole narrative of having a “mandate from his constituency” gets a fairly meaningful rug-pull. It’s obnoxious that he won, yes, but binface bested their previous record of votes received (308 - I heard the bin itself mention it in an interview a few days ago) by about 3000%.

So, yeah, the continuing source of inspiration won, but achieved almost nothing of what he originally set out to do with this political stunt.

I had a conversation with my dad lately about wealth inequality, wherein he started defending Bill Gates, and I was both utterly baffled and incredibly dismayed.

It’s not awkward if your brain is wired well for it. Specifically: I realized I just… don’t get jealous, really. Like, ever. And I’m happy when my partner is having a wonderful time, regardless of whether I’m there. The main point for me in a partnership is that we enrich each others lives. Pretty much everything else beyond that, I consider flexible and negotiable.

So to be clear, not being above board and consensual about it is the problem.

I am poly; I’m going to visit one of my partners right now; she is married, and both she and her husband (whom I have met) date and have relationships outside of their marriage, and they are in a happy and rewarding relationship between themselves as well. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of that. But communication and openness is absolutely crucial - otherwise it’s just cheating, not ENM.

The thing that changed was the leaders involved - and even then, besides the lead-in to Feb 22, 2022 (which was, it should be mentioned, actually a masterclass in the tactical application of geopolitical intelligence), Biden did pretty much fuck-all in the grand scheme of things for most of the rest of his term, because he surrounded himself with ossified dipshits who refused to understand that Russia’s armed forces are a hollow, rusting shell compared to the might of the Soviet military in it’s prime.

A forceful, proportional, credible response at any point between 2008 and 2022 would have likely drastically changed Putin’s calculus and expectations of launching an open and active invasion. The problem was specifically that the threats and sanctions the US and Europe were making in response to Russian military adventurism for that entire interval were fundamentally noncredible.

I know why we ended up where we are. I know the history because I was there: with the Lua/LuaJIT schism, people wanted to support both environments, and targeting 5.1 was a good way to support both. And then 5.2, 5.3, etc. came along and people wanted to keep supporting the latest PUC-Rio Lua, but still felt tied to the 5.1 anchor. I’m sure I’m partly to blame for this because I engaged in this and helped others, by maintaining compat-5.3, itself an evolution of compat-5.2, with a history tracing all the way back to compat-5.0, which predates my involvement with Lua… and then we’re talking over 20 years ago.

So I haven’t worked with Lua myself, but is that right? There are forward-incompatibilities in minor versions…? Because that honestly seems pretty fucking stupid. Making basically every version include breaking changes and refusing to follow semantic versioning standards that are designed to essentially account for that is pants-on-head stupid.
