Hmm iirc the physical setup (tape drive, auto loader, HBA card for my server) set me back ~2.5k (with the bulk of that being the drive itself) and then the actual tapes was prob another ~1k for 200TBs raw, but more like 100TB actual usable since I use another tape for a backup off-site copy

I finally bit the bullet months ago and invested into LTO8 for my cold storage, I still need to buy drives at some point, but at least I’ve got a decent path to put shit in the mean time so I don’t gotta delete anything lolol

Fr, I despise the Tankie devs authoritarianism, but at the very least they don’t do some shady reddit corpo shit with their code (for the most part)

Actually, according to lemmyverse.net (great place for comm discovery btw!) and my own experience cross posting .ml content, .ml is almost entirely held up by a core set of the most diehard tankie users. Most .ml comms are overshadowed by comms on other instances with much higher Monthly Active Users numbers.

The comm search field goes by pure subscriber count which doesn’t really decrease for any reason other than a user actually unsubscribing from a comm so all of those insane numbers on some .ml comms are just overinflated and don’t reflect actual traffic. It’s full of dead and/or banned accounts, alts and some still active users

You should also add hexbear.net and lemmygrad.ml, if you think .ml is bad those 2 are widely considered to be far worse. Together they comprise the Tankie Triad of the lemmyverse

Be aware though that while blocking the triad makes your feed much better, the blocking system of lemmy is horribly implemented (Many of us consider it done on purpose (the lemmy devs are hardcore Tankies)) so even though you block instances, those instance users can still be bothersome on posts outside those instance (e.g. you’ll still see them on a post on a comm on lemmy.dbzer0.com for instance). They are also known to create Alts on other instances to stir up trouble and brigade posts.

Here’s a list of well known Tankies if you’d like to individually block, most of em will have alts on hex and grad (I made it from memory so I might miss some others) Alternatively, depending on your client, you can also just tag their usernames and then if you see them in the wild you’ll know right away (Which is what I prefer, I prefer to tag users rather than outright block so I can counter their crap if I so choose)

Most are fine, there are a few right wing instances that crop up but most instances defederated from them fairly quickly (unless you’re on an “as long as it’s not illegal” instance, which include dbzer0, Lemmy.zip and lemmy.sdf.org)

The ones that are somewhat still federated but best to avoid are the ones known as the Tankie Triad, Hexbear Lemmygrad and Lemmy.ml.

Hex and grad are fairly widely defederated from, including your instance, because of their tankie authoritarian ideology (Supports and defends authoritarian countries like Russia and NK (they’ll spread propaganda like Ukraine deserved to be invaded by Russia and it’s not even Russia invading but “liberation”)). Lemmy.ml tends to not be, because they try to keep it more subtle, there’s this mega thread that documents it. It’s lemmy.ml centric, but general rule of thumb is that whatever Lemmy.ml does hex and grad are known to be worse.

Most other instances are fine, .world…is just too big and that “power” has tended to go to their heads sometimes, though I will say not to the mass degree that Lemmy.ml does.

Oh and startrek.website is pretty shit, but you could tell that from this post LMAO
