It changed. Back when this all went down, instance bans did not automatically issue community bans. This was a problem in the case of spammers, because it would mean that if an admin banned a user with post removal turned on, their posts would only be removed locally, and the removals wouldn’t federate to other instances.

Around a year or so ago (maybe a bit earlier?) lemmy instance bans were changed to also issue community bans for any local community the account had interacted with. This meant that when an account was banned with content removal, those removals would federate to other instances for communities that were hosted on that instance.

It’s entirely possible to host an instance that doesn’t require emails to sign up. Blahaj lemmy and piefed don’t for example. We don’t have a spam problem though, because we require manual approvals of new accounts. Lack of email verification is only a problem when it’s combined with open signup

I make an exception to that rule for the /c/superbowl. I love seeing a bunch of owls suddenly appear in my feed :)

We bypass the issue. We use DJI mini mics, which allow you to connect multiple mics to a single base receiver, and that receiver appears as a stereo sound source.

I don’t know, maybe they have a specific agreement with Patreon or something. But in general, that’s how Patreon like services work with YouTube

Because “censorship” in this context is a weasel word. What people complaining about censorship really want, is the ability to be more openly racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic etc. What people pushing back against that want is less bigotry.

But because the bigots can’t own their bigotry, they hide behind “censorship” and not having enough “free speech”.

This is literally youtube saying “The president says that hating on folks is ok, and we will make more money by aligning with that”. It’s not them taking a stance on free speech, because they still block stuff that costs them money. They still demonetise or block things that are supportive of LGBT folk for the flimsiest of reasons, none of which they would do if censorship or free speech were their reasoning.

This has nothing to do with “censorship” and everything to do with a deliberate attempt not to increase free speech, but to shift “allowed” speech to the right

I tried to love it. It’s one of the most feature rich fediverse platforms out there. It has groups built in out of the box, it talks to Diaspora as well as Activitypub… But it’s just… not nice to use.

I can’t see feeds at all, just topics which are way down the bottom.

Our lemmy instance is up to date. It’s our sharkey instance that needs work done that we haven’t got around to yet.

As for Piefed, we spun it up mostly because it’s feature rich and many folk are uncomfortable with the politics of the lemmy devs. Migration wasn’t an option, because there is no database migration pathway, so we just spun up a dedicated instance.
