US media has been covering these. It’s not a secret and if you haven’t heard of them I really don’t feel inclined to do the most basic searches to satisfy your curiosity. No Kings was massive and country wide, Minneapolis was under siege for a month, congressional candidates were arrested in Chicago, some guy got accused of terrorism for throwing a sandwich, two protesters have been murdered, and people demonstrating with fireworks were convicted on 50 year sentences.
Ok, but nothing more is (currently) happening in India.
There have been massive protests in the US. There have been arrests of protesters in the US, many of whom were not released on the next day. And as you point out in your comment, they’ve been risking getting shot in the head while doing it.
This protest is entering its second day. Maybe slow your roll a little in the comparison.

If that’s all it takes to hack a system, that’s on the outside system/user, not Gemini. And probably wasn’t a particularly valuable system/account.
The local police should also need to go to court to access their own cameras. The 4th amendment protects against police surveiling people without a warrant.
As far as I understand it, the alternatives do not include a nationwide search as part of their features. Flock is actually especially bad on that front.
That said, I think most of the emotional revulsion against Flock is just the idea of persistent tracking of everyone by your local police force, and that isn’t mitigated by a brand switch.

This is clownish. They’re weird tankies who also write software they give away for free. They don’t build blocklists to secretly shape the Lemmy Fediverse or even force you to hear their opinions. They have nearly zero political impact on the world at large but quite a lot of impact on federated software, but apparently annoying you through inaction is your red line.
One instance being moderated a way you don’t like is an incredibly silly reason to revoke support for the development of software you use regularly. Like not just irrelevant, but literally missing the point of the software they’re developing.
Probably more accurate to say he got banned for attempting to circumvent moderation. He was moderated for Islamophobia.
My experience of trolls getting bored was from Reddit. It’s so easy to ban them and filter out fresh accounts that practically no equation of troll vs. moderator effort would ever be anything but a waste for the troll. There was one guy who set calendar reminders to flame us in modmail every 90 days or whatever when the longest mute expired and it was just amusing. He set up all this infrastructure and typed out a big flame message and we just hit a single button.
Only truly automated trolling would be meaningful, and that requires a home instance that doesn’t put in restrictions or hurdles in account creation. Which will quickly become obvious as an attack vector and then defederated. And federation of new instances can be restricted so they don’t get to just unleash hell. I’d be more worried about actual DDOSes than a troll storm.
I’m sure there are fake accounts flying under the radar here now, and they’re a big problem on Reddit, but trolling is easy to manage.
In my experience most trolls just do low effort trolling, so simple interventions can quash a lot. While some people do get so into social media they make multiple alts for ban evasion, it’s much easier for mods to ban an account than for the troll to make it so after a few cycles they’ll just get tired of it.
And if there’s an instance so open that people can automate account creation so that trolling is just as easy it’ll probably get defederated.
Lemmy seems structurally much better for this, as different instances can independently prune their list without needing one true culture to grow. If people want their social media to be a clubhouse rather than a gladiatorial arena, that’s fine. Go find the spaces that accommodate your preferences. Lemmy supports it.
