I haven’t played the game, but it really sounds like you’re taking it way too seriously. Methinks you need to chill.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•What are some hidden gems of the fediverse?English
3·7 days agoFunhole isn’t exactly hidden but you might not see it if your instance isn’t federated to it.
Not only have I not seen it, I can’t even find it when I go looking for it.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Asked LA Fitness to cancel my membership, they offered to freeze it for $10/month insteadEnglish
24·13 days agoI thought I heard that California had a law requiring cancelling be just as easy as signing up? Is that not the case? (Assuming the name of the gym is an indicator of the city it’s based in, and not the state or country.)
Here’s a link to the song. Or on YouTube, if you prefer.
It’s pretty great, in the way of Internet culture of the mid-aughts, the same time period from which the Chuck Norris memes originate.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•AI Bubble: Nobody will pay for unsubsidised AI | Ed ZitronEnglish
4·16 days agoI’m not certain, but it could be that as the cost goes down, they keep bringing out more powerful models, so the cost per query stays constant.
If this is accurate, their need to compete with each other to have “the best” AI is creating a prisoner’s dilemma where everyone loses because the individually-optimal choice is worse than if they all agreed that today’s AI is good enough and concentrated on affordability and minimising energy/water usage instead.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Should anybody trust Firefox again unless they put "we won't sell your data" back into the privacy policy? (Have they done so...? I can't tell.)English
1·22 days agoIt might or might not be true, but I’m not sure it’s particularly helpful advice. It’s too wide-sweeping. Literally everything is a fork, apart from Firefox and Safari. Maybe Chrome, since they hard-forked and now go their separate ways from WebKit. But still, that’s only 3 browsers. And unless you think that Firefox needs to be avoided because of its privacy violations but somehow are ok with Google Chrome, “avoid forks” doesn’t work as an option.

196@lemmy.blahaj.zone•I take some tiny amount of satisfaction from never liking Mr. RuleEnglish
1·22 days agoI don’t love that kind of philanthropy either. But it’s not the billionaires’ fault that that’s the system we live in. So when they do do charitable giving, I’m happy to give them the credit for it.
I see Mr Beast’s problem (in this respect) as twofold.
First, as you said, it was often a business expense. In fact on many occasions, it felt really gross and exploitative in the moment, like a sort of poverty porn.
And second, is the fact that even his more legitimate “charitable” raising feels very…Effective Altruism–coded. The idea that we can Technology our way into Saving Humanity. Like the Project Seas (or whatever it was called) where he organised a bunch of YouTubers into helping him raise a significant amount of money for a project that would supposedly use some fancy gadgets to clean up huge amounts of plastic waste in the ocean. Except that the company behind this had no interest in consulting with actual experts, and it turns out that their product simply does not work. It reminds me a little of that time Elon “pedo guy” Musk tried to insert himself into a cave rescue operation with a fancy submarine, and got butthurt when he was told “actually that won’t help us.” It also does nothing about reducing waste in the first place, which is by far the more important work.

World News@quokk.au•No, you can't transfer your prize, Nobel body says amid Machado's Trump suggestionEnglish
3·3 months agoI mean it’s pretty obvious that Trump does care a great deal about the Peace prize. He was going on and on about it last year, and even convinced FIFA to give him a Temu Peace prize instead.
And Trump’s insecurities surrounding Obama have been much documented since the beginning of his 2016 run. Those insecurities provide a pretty significant motivation for his desire to get the Peace prize.

14·3 months agoI’m not sure I see how your argument fits together. Nothing you said is wrong, but it doesn’t dispute the point I make. It doesn’t really even try to, apart from the words “I disagree” at the start.

World News@quokk.au•No, you can't transfer your prize, Nobel body says amid Machado's Trump suggestionEnglish
32·3 months agoTrump is so desperate to get the Peace Prize, just because he’s an incessant narcissist. He got his start running for politics because a few jokes from then-President Obama hurt his feelings, and trying to beat Obama at everything he had done really stands over Trump.

World News@quokk.au•Danish troops told to 'shoot first, ask questions later' if US invades GreenlandEnglish
18·3 months agoIf you’d had it on your bingo card at the start of the decade that’d have been a shocker. But after Trump openly suggested the possibility early last year, it’s hardly a huge surprise if someone predicted it this year, even if he did quieten down on that front towards the end of the year.
Stupid scare “quotes”.
