  • I was under the impression that Slytherin was about ambition, not just cunning. You have to not only be cunning, but also be ambitious enough to want to use that cunning to get one over on everyone else. Even Horace Slughorn used his cunning to further his own position, and he was considered the ‘best’ Slytherin in the book, so that’s their best foot forward!

Oh well, could be worse, you could be in Hufflepuff, which consists almost entirely of the ‘boring’ students. The rejects, the terminally useless, the basic bitches.

  • I’m interested to see what an open source cloud standard would look like. There’s a lot of elements that share functionality between Azure and AWS, but they’re just different enough that it’s a massive pain in the arse to move from one to the other and you basically have to re-write your Terraform from scratch.

If there was something that was standard so I could write Terraform that goes “I want thirteen microservices all running in docker containers and a message bus with these types of message that lets them communicate” without specifying the exact implementation, I would be a happy camper.

  • Feels like this is going to devolve into a bit of an Old Boys Club. As in, only ‘recognised’ artists get the basic income, and who decides who gets recognised? Art organisations, and those will very quickly restrict their membership or else be flooded by anyone who claims to be an artist and can get an AI to spit out some slop and get some moron to buy it.

Then, the government can go to those art organisations and go “Right, no more art critical of the government or we won’t be recognising your organisation for the Basic Income scheme”, thus cutting off the funding for the membership and, driven by the need to eat and survive, said membership will alter their art to be more comfortable to whoever happens to be in charge at the time.

  • According to the Prose Edda, Odin decides exactly which people are going to die in battle that day, and then brings them all to Valhalla… Which contradicts other accounts somewhat. Then again a lot of old Norse mythology has been so polluted by Christianity that who knows what was originally Norse and what was changed later?

In some accounts, you don’t even need to die in battle. Odin just thinks “I need that guy on my team” and takes you.

Valhalla isn’t a reward though, it’s a hell for those that don’t enjoy battle. Here’s what happens in Valhalla:

    • You equip your armor and weapons
    • You walk out into the courtyard
    • You kill eachother
    • You are resurrected
    • You go to dinner
    • You equip your armor and weapons
    • You walk out into the courtyard
    • You kill eachother

    etc. etc.

It is NOT a reward. Valhalla is not heaven, it is a place that Odin puts his very specific chosen warriors that died a violent death in battle. Whether you go to Valhalla doesn’t depend on you being either a good or bad person, only how you died. Odin himself will even actively intervene and make sure you lose your fight and die in battle, just because he wants you as one of his Einherjar.

Valhalla being portrayed as this big reward for good people is a bastardised version brought in by Christians.

  • If there’s one thing the UK is good at, it’s making rich people feel important. It’s how all those Russian oligarchs feel so comfortable in London, comfortable enough to spill their secrets. Nobody suspects the butler, nobody suspects that behind the pomp and ceremony there’s a knife waiting for you.

Trump likes to be flattered, so flatter him, and then get as much cash out of the US as possible! $150bn investment so far as a result of this little bit of pageantry, since all those tech companies are now dancing to Trump’s tune.

  • The absolute minimum that should be done should be to split ICE up into the original agencies that were merged into it in 2002. Originally, the border policing and customs, and the immigration enforcement were two separate agencies. Customs was controlled by the Treasury, immigration was controlled by the Justice Department.

Basically, undo everything that was done in response to 9/11 and dissolve the Department of Homeland Security.

  • That’s funny though because I know Copilot can google things and talk about them.

Like, a news story can appear that day, and you go “Did you hear about the guy that did X and Y?” and Copilot will google it and be like “Oh yeah you’re referring to the news story that came out today about the guy that did X and Y. It was reported in Newspaper that Z was also involved” and then send you a link to the article.

So like… GPT5 should be able to supplement its knowledge with basic searching, it just doesn’t.
