I moved to Piefed ~6 months ago (after about a year of Lemmy), so I am not part of this wave (although I think there was a mini-wave when I joined), that being said, welcome to all newcomers!

It really shouldn’t be though. Comment votes don’t really matter IMO (post votes are helpful though).
There are no real gaming or device or brand communities.
Some relatively active (in terms of posts, breadth of content and user engagement) gaming communities across Lemmy/Threadi:
I moderate/curate like 6 of them, so I am biased, but we do have a solid selection of gaming communities beyond !games@lemmy.world or !pcgaming@lemmy.ca.

At the risk of sounding cheezy (and in a very nerdy way no less), Piefed feels like the future. Best principles of what made the internet good back in the day, with a modern approach. And all of it done on enthusiasm, DIY contributions and some modest donations.
Side note, one way to make YT work better, is to simply make a bookmark folder linking to the video pages (sorted by new) of the channels you watch. Even the search in YT is godawful and clearly design for “engagement” instead of finding what you are looking for.
It’s funny how we did fine for so long without upvotes/downvotes, although this approach was always around (Slashdot).

An option to help manage this is to allow requests only via the help community (explicit post with the right flair) and say triage the requests once every two weeks.
Just a thought.
I think the LW philosophy is fair; you message them or create a new post in the support comm and they generally let you take over abandoned communities.
I use Piefed on Voyager, they don’t really support any of the major features of Piefed.
I still use the mobile WebUI mostly.

I also wish the Lemmy WebUI would adopt this model, it would make sidebar links so much cleaner and easier to use for new and casual users.
The communities are all connected. It doesn’t really matter how you access them.
Perhaps someone else can highlight a piefed instance with a WebUI option similar to old Reddit.
