  • Really, because I have a Bosch and I had to install the app and then use HACS to install an integration which goes through their cloud.

I don’t use that for anything more than alerts but it’s annoying it has zero local control. This is a perfect use case for Zigbee or Z-Wave and if I’m paying a premium I don’t get why I wouldn’t get premium features.

Also some features are app only (special dry modes etc) so if I want the functionality I paid for I have to be signed up for their cloud.

  • Why did anyone think that a LLM would be able to solve logic or math problems?

They’re literally autocomplete. Like, 100% autocomplete that is based on an enormous statistical model. They don’t think, they don’t reason, they don’t compute. They lay words out in the most likely order.

To be fair it’s pretty amazing they can do that from a user prompt - but it’s not doing whatever it is that our brains do. It’s not a brain. It’s not “intelligent”. LLMs are machine learning algorithms but they are not AI.

It’s a fucking hornswoggle, always has been 🔫🧑‍🚀

  • Well hopefully it will be the start of actions, but I don’t have high hopes.

Going immediately to counter-assault gives ammo to the freaks who think their actions are justified and they will escalate. Same with the IDF after Oct 6th, same with the US government after gestures broadly literally everything since WWII.

Real responsibility means making a statement first. Real courage means following through if you get a response you don’t like.

The first action they took was the correct one. I have little faith they’ll find the courage to take the second one (but I’d love to be proven wrong)

We aren’t talking about the majority of homophobes; we’re talking about homophobic lawmakers who push for anti-gay legislation - already performative of “banning” or “being tough on” their other “sins” like drugs or crime, and they keep getting caught doing drugs and gay things.

Statistically there are far fewer politicians than LGBTQA folks. So when some sociopath rises to power because they figured out they should be “tough” on all the things people hurt them for, all the things people appear to dislike, you’re not gonna get people with empathy who speak about a brighter inclusive future, you’re gonna get bullshit artists who draw on their own pain and twist it into a performance of what, in their mind, people seem to want. They prey on the prejudices of the masses.

And it works. The anti-drug politicians get caught with coke and speed. The anti-sex worker politicians get caught with prostitutes. The “save the children” freaks get caught with underage kids. The “fiscally responsible” get caught insider trading and money laundering. And the homophobes get caught with men.

Because the biggest flaw of democracy is to allow a person to deflect all the hatred they receive back out into the world and if they can perform it charismatically enough, they can use it to rise to power. Hell look at Trump, that’s how his superpower works. He can shit talk anything, and it fucking works on just enough people that it’s always been worth it for him to do it.

So if you are someone who sees the “anti-LGBTQA politicians are always closeted!” (or, are someone who is using/making jokes with it!) and it upsets you - make sure you understand that it’s not a comment on LGBTQA folks as a whole, it’s a remark about how society who’s majority is empathetic (normal humans) yet prejudiced (unfortunately currently also normal humans) will elect people who speak from their pain, and those abused by it will exploit their suffering to give that crowd exactly what they want.

The sociopath cornered into being closeted their whole life will scream from the rooftops about banning homosexuality, because not only did people stop hurting them but now have rewarded them greatly.

So no, the majority of homophobes are not closeted. But I’m willing to believe that doesn’t hold up in Washington.

  • If you shut down the computer gracefully first before you power the disks off it should be ok more often than not, but you really should try to have everything on the same system so this can all be coordinated by the OS and the hardware.

As others have said, avoid powering the disks off before the OS has had a chance to shut down or your disks will NOT be in a recoverable state when everything comes back online.

I’m not even sure the setup you are describing would benefit at all from a different storage method, even “regular” writes could be in memory or controller buffers. External drives are not meant to have their power cut.

  • Don’t worry, pretty soon they will just block password managers from autofilling fields on their login page so that you HAVE to remember your password! Then you’ll be happy it can’t be that long, you can only fit so much on a post-it note on the side of your monitor

    /s

EDIT: I think there should be a law against blocking password managers for filling in fields. Any brute force bots are going to submit HTTP requests directly anyway; no one is hitting the DOM to do that
