The European Commission (EC) is planning to “energetically” advance its probe into content moderation on X (formerly Twitter), potentially ordering changes at Elon Musk’s social network in the coming months, Bloomberg reported.

Since 2023, the EC has been investigating X for possible violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). Notably, it’s the group’s first formal probe under the DSA, which requires very large online platforms to meet strict content moderation and transparency standards to ensure user safety, reduce misinformation, prevent illegal/harmful activity, and facilitate “a fair and open online platform environment.”

The EU is the last major entity which has any chance of changing this timeline. The US government is fully compromised.

Something like 50% or almost that european countries have rising extreme right wing parties basically winning or almost winning everywhere. It’s not gonna be pretty.

    Bro…

The right wing/fascists are gaining seats and control everywhere while telling us to our faces what they want to do and all these centrist moderate fuckers can do is “plan to energetically advance a probe into a potential moderation”.

I hate this timeline as much as I hate them

I’m not. Especially since this timeline is evolving as it is, I’m interested in actual ideas how to deal with it.

Jeez, I wonder what could be done in this very specific instance where a billionaire, who has very much openly aligned himself with fascism, has also tried to influence foreign elections and subvert entire countries’ democratic processes by leveraging his immense capital to buy and poison a massive “public” platform. We should definitely leave things as they are and let him use his platform however he wants to spread more lies. Surely just talking more about what could potentially be done about it will help! Maybe we could even write him a letter to ask for his input? No reason to, you know, take actual measures to tackle all (or even some) of this and face the serious and life-threatening challenges we face as a specie. Let’s keep chatting more and more about nothing while, as always, the fascists keep dismantling the few safeguards we have and our planet keeps burning because we don’t want to shake the boat too much.

Obvious sarcasm aside, what would you do? Talking is great when you have the time to do so, and when, more importantly, you have people genuinely willing to have a conversation and find a middle ground. They told us multiple times they are not willing

I mean, it feels weird to defend the EU for its incredible phlegm, but this isn’t what’s happening here. They don’t plan to leave things as they are but decided to get their fat and heavy ass moving “a bit faster”. This actually is “taking actual measures”. I guess we both agree that more and faster is needed, but I think in order to achieve that it is necessary to win those “moderate centrist fuckers” for the cause instead of cursing and capitulating, even if that feels much better.

At this point if they just passed something like the US anti-tiktok law it would solve a lot of problems and they could say it was retaliatory. It would force facebook and X.com to sell its EU arm to a local company.
