Social media platform Meta has 48 hours to respond to claims by Brazil’s leftwing candidate and incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s campaign accusing the tech platform of blocking content on the company’s platforms. Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court on Saturday gave the social media giant 48 hours to clarify whether it reduced the reach of posts by Lula’s campaign ahead of the tight October 25 run-off against rightwing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro.

There are no good guys in this story, are there?
Bad guy seems to be Bolsonaro and Meta. Why would Lula be included in that?
Well my understanding is that no one is doing much for the favelas. Not even Lula in his first term did much for them. And he’s capable of much less now with the endemic Brazilian right wing funded and supported by the wealthy in my country. But that’s about as bad as I’ve seen. So yeah I really don’t understand the characterization or lumping him with the others. Their legislature there is chock full of bolansario allies. Who are Express enemies of Lula, and the rest of the legislature aren’t really allies either.
I suspect the characterization may have to do with the more radical-minded. If he’s not fomenting revolution somehow. He’s an evil failure?
Bolsonaro is a corrupt conman 10 times worse not only for Brazil but for the entire world, but Lula is also a pos who is out of touch with reality. Brazil has one of the worst wealth gaps of the entire world while it’s supposed to be a democrasy. All he does is telling them to work harder out of his mansion while befriending other corrupt politicians. he sucks dick and should disappear to maybe let another leader get in charge, but for now under Bolsonaro the lights will get dimmer and things get worse before, hopefully somehow, get better
Well, not being one of the absolutely worst imaginable, doesn’t make you good by default. Lula is not a good candidate - it just so happens that Bolsonaro is incomparably much, much worse. It speaks to the state of the Brazilian political system that, with millions and millions of people that could potentially have been candidates, it’s still these two that turn up as the two “best options” from the political process.
It’s a moot point now, because Lula doesn’t really stand a snowman’s chance in hell of winning this election. But you could argue that he, and PT, threw this one. I don’t think it’s far fetched, anyway, to say that a better candidate could have won this election.
That’s how the US works as well.
Yes, but everything isn’t about the US, all the time.
Who said it was? I’m speaking of my personal experience as someone who lives there. So the notion that one would vote for an imperfect candidate to block a fascist from taking power is not unfamiliar to me.
oh, ok
I find it difficult to consider a politician in power who wants to exercise control over Internet speech in this way a good guy.
The solution to problems like this would be the fediverse, his campaign could run its own instance…
He wants his posts to actually show up on Facebook? I don’t really see that as regulating internet speech. Meta has meddled in tons of elections and I think it’s fair to complain about.
Running his own instance would be about the equivalent of just making their own website or blog. The point of social media is the dissemination to the public, and just having a Lemmy/whatever instance doesn’t accomplish that.
It’s definitely a difficult issue. We never should have allowed the Internet to become as centralized as it is now. 😕
He’s made mistakes, but the other side is literally Nazis.
thats usually how the world works if you look hard enough
