Social media platform Meta has 48 hours to respond to claims by Brazil’s leftwing candidate and incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s campaign accusing the tech platform of blocking content on the company’s platforms. Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court on Saturday gave the social media giant 48 hours to clarify whether it reduced the reach of posts by Lula’s campaign ahead of the tight October 25 run-off against rightwing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro.

I find it difficult to consider a politician in power who wants to exercise control over Internet speech in this way a good guy.

The solution to problems like this would be the fediverse, his campaign could run its own instance…

He wants his posts to actually show up on Facebook? I don’t really see that as regulating internet speech. Meta has meddled in tons of elections and I think it’s fair to complain about.

Running his own instance would be about the equivalent of just making their own website or blog. The point of social media is the dissemination to the public, and just having a Lemmy/whatever instance doesn’t accomplish that.

It’s definitely a difficult issue. We never should have allowed the Internet to become as centralized as it is now. 😕
