I haven’t seen the film but the marketing for it hasn’t been great. It looks like it’s supposed to be this really biting satire but the trailer makes it seem way too over the top and on the nose for that.

Plus I generally think we’re way beyond satire at this point in history. Closing the barn door after all the animals have run away.

Exactly it was making fun of the disaster that climate change is going cause and makes this film showing how the rich who caused the problem is going be sent in to save us. Literally had them using nukes by the president. Fucking trailer so horrible that made me feel gross. We are in a terrible time line make this joke. Also money so tight no way would or should people waste their money on this. Hell wait 2 weeks be out on streaming on Netflix.

I don’t much understand the claims of narrative complexity this film is getting. I listened to the NPR reviews and they absolute gushed about how this film asks the viewer to consider multiple things simultaneously, as though there’s some sort of shortage of films that contain layers of subtext. Meanwhile Charlie Kaufman is out here like

where was all this when I made Anomalisa or I’m Thinking of Ending Things or fuck Orion and the Dark?

The movie was quite good, yes, but hardly groundbreaking. It’s Iñárritu watered-down for an American palette. BARDO left me with so much more.

I felt exactly the same thing when I read a discussion talking about the last of us like it was the first game to have a story that had any kind of depth or meaning.

We get angry at this because it’s just media spin. The news is just opinion pieces using vibes to paint pictures that help wherever the money is coming from. I like indie critics on youtube and stuff because I have much more faith that their opinion is their own. YMS comes to mind, which I assume you may know since he loves Charlie Kaufman too! ❤️

I know it’s bombing but I really enjoyed it. Tom Cruise’s performance was Oscar worthy, and all the supporting cast were terrific too. The main plot was suitably OTT, mimicking the absurdity of the current US administration, while maintaining enough humour to still be called a satire. The secondary plot was probably the weakest part of the film, but they tied it up perfectly at the end imo.

In the trailers, Cruise looked like he was doing an impression, not playing a character. Don’t know if he was any better in the actual movie, but I don’t plan to watch it.

Depending on your reading this could be deliberate, but in any case it felt spot-on in the movie itself. He has a monologue in the film that goes for like 10-15 minutes and is probably the highlight of the whole thing. Genuinely excellent acting regardless of how you feel about him as a person

I saw it and it looked funny… I’m just really not in the mood for something that hits that close to home and I cannot imagine an ending that would make it worth watching.

Even if it had a happy ending… it would feel hollow knowing that that ending wouldn’t happen in real life.

If they went on in some post apocalyptic continuance and learned nothing… I would be deeply depressed.

If they somehow managed to kick the can down the road… same thing.

it would just make me depressed.

They actually manage to subvert all those in an interesting way. The ending is depressing but not in the way that Don’t Look Up was, to me it was more nuanced and interesting.
