In this issue, we feature a reflection from OpenCitations, an Open Science infrastructure that provides free and open citation data and bibliographic metadata as an alternative to proprietary databases such as Web of Science and Scopus. Drawing on insights from its recent community survey, the piece explores the tensions between openness, usability and long-term sustainability, and argues for new models of competitiveness rooted in shared stewardship rather than commercial scale.
