And Apple aren’t that much better. They make a lot of privacy claims, but are still pushing hard for their online services like iCloud, and their hardware is designed to hide what it’s doing from the user. Apple is still collecting user data. They might be sharing less with third parties, but they are still collecting it.

  • When I was in high school, computers had Deep Freeze setup, because kids would constantly break the OS and download malware. It’s a software that resets the C drive to a known state on every reboot. You might consider using something similar on classroom workstations.

Also, it might be worth learning about network booting, automating the Linux installer and ansible to install things on every machine at once and automate configuration work.

  • Personally, I actually enjoyed it. It had that 90s nostalgic vibe, and I liked it.

However, the renewed 25 years later season felt like Lynch was mocking the audience (or was high on something). The season was boring as fck, story was bad and made no sense. None of the loose ends from the original show were resolved. The acting was so bad, I actually wanted to give it up after the first episode. And he didn’t even give us what we wanted to see more of… Detective Cooper. Instead we got braindead cooper and evil doppleganger cooper for all but the last few minutes of the season. And for some weird reason, every episode ended on some bad recording of a live song that had nothing to do with the show.

  • This would only be in ambiguous situations when the confidence level of “pedestrian” and “cyclist” are close to each other. If there’s an object with 20% confidence level that it’s a pedestrian, it’s probably not. But we’re talking about the situation when you have to decide whether to yield or not, which isn’t really safety critical.

The car should avoid any collisions with any object regardless of whether it’s a pedestrian, cyclist, cat, box, fallen tree or any other object, moving or not.

  • Training self driving cars that way would be irresponsible, because it would behave unpredictably and could be really dangerous. In reality, self driving cars use AI for only some tasks for which it is really good at like object recognition (e.g. recognizing traffic signs, pedestrians and other vehicles). The car uses all this data to build a map of its surroundings and tries to predict what the other participants are going to do. Then, it decides whether it’s safe to move the vehicle, and the path it should take. All these things can be done algorithmically, AI is only necessary for object recognition.

In cases such as this, just follow the money to find the incentives. Waymo wants to maximize their profits. This means maximizing how many customers they can serve as well as minimizing driving time to save on gas. How do you do that? Program their cars to be a bit more aggressive: don’t stop on yellow, don’t stop at crosswalks except to avoid a collision, drive slightly over the speed limit. And of course, lobby the shit out of every politician to pass laws allowing them to get away with breaking these rules.

  • The difference between 2nd and 3rd candidates is 2000 votes. There were 9 million votes in total. That’s insanely close. There is widespread fear that during the recount some votes will be nullified, and some will be changed in some god forsaken villages, resulting in an overturn (which will result in a re-election according to the constitution).

Candidate #1 is a pro russian fascist. #2 is progressive pro-european. #3 is just very corrupt and made a lot of people angry. If #1 goes against #2 in the second round, #2 has a decent chance of winning. #1 against #3 would be really bad, like having to choose between hitler and trump.
