yeah, I’m still subscribed, but don’t like their trajectory, a lot of their new videos feel like they’re framed too sensationalistically and light on substance. I tried out their historical channel (“Kurzgesagt After Dark”) when it launched, but that was even worse, just focusing on the scandal and suffering of their subjects 😮💨
I skip a lot of their videos nowadays, did this AI one too bc I knew it was bullshit.

My issue with language learning is that I hate illogical and inefficient systems, and sadly languages have so much organically accumulated bullshit in them, that I get too frustrated to continue 😅 (Yea I know, I should try Esperanto, but even that has genders.)

Same lol. And the weird thing is that I quite enjoy number-based games like Picross and Hexcells, but I hate actual arithmetics.

but ASMR is generally just annoying/grating to me
It’s so rare to find other people like this! ASMR sound effects make me viscerally uncomfortable, and I especially get creeped out by the whispering voices as if they were right next to your ear 😰

and you can watch in real time as their world view starts wobbling and they start making up rationalizations and excuses for behaviour that is utterly narcissistic.
I encounter this when chatting with a family member and she mentions that she “loves animals” and who “couldn’t hurt a fly” while also being an omnivore. She feels sorry for the animals when she thinks of industrial farming, but does her best to never think about it. When this topic comes up, I don’t say anything (we’ve been through the topic in the past), but she sees the impatience with her bullshit on my face, and gets flustered by the fact that someone doesn’t consider this cognitive dissonance normal.

This! Oddly the more socially confident I’ve got with age, the more draining and annoying I find social hangouts and noise 😅 Not having to interact with anyone the whole day is bliss (at least in-person, I don’t mind reading/writing on these forums).

I definitely game less than in my teens mostly due to reddit & lemmy, but I have a browser mod to disable social media sites and other timesinks (TVTropes lol) after 8pm, so I have several hours a day ringfenced for gaming :) (But I also got better at actually playing rather than spending hours preparing to play. I was an anxious teen 😅)

Thanks for the background! And I love that anecdote 🤣
Pál utcai fiúk is a pretty fun historical snapshot from what I remember. I only read it in middle school, but I remember I found the kids’ lifestyle and hobbies interesting :)
I grew up in Budapest, but have lived in Glasgow for 15+ years now. I couldn’t bear the Hungarian heat lol.

Swedish and Hungarian as first languages, how did that come about? :) (I’m Hungarian too.)

Yeah, I enjoy feeling/smelling paper books, but ebooks win me over by their overwhelming convenience 😅

Haha I live in Glasgow, so it’s often not fully dry, and I have to turn bottles and cans upside down to let the rainwater pour out before bagging them.

Thanks :) I really like that it has an immediate positive effect. I typically work on digital documents and long projects, so it’s at most a couple times a year that my work has a tangible end result that I can leaf through. Litter picking gives immediate satisfaction :)
It reminds me of a scene in Iain Banks’s sci-fi novel Use of Weapons:
Later, he had wandered off. The huge ship was an enchanted ocean in which you could never drown, and he threw himself into it to try to understand if not it, then the people who had built it.
He walked for days, stopping at bars and restaurants whenever he felt thirsty, hungry or tired; mostly they were automatic and he was served by little floating trays, though a few were staffed by real people. They seemed less like servants and more like customers who’d taken a notion to help out for a while.
‘Of course I don’t have to do this,’ one middle-aged man said, carefully cleaning the table with a damp cloth. He put the cloth in a little pouch, sat down beside him. ‘But look; this table’s clean.’
He agreed that the table was clean.
‘Usually,’ the man said. ‘I work on alien - no offence - alien religions; Directional Emphasis In Religious Observance; that’s my speciality… like when temples or graves or prayers always have to face in a certain direction; that sort of thing? Well, I catalogue, evaluate, compare; I come up with theories and argue with colleagues, here and elsewhere. But… the job’s never finished; always new examples, and even the old ones get re-evaluated, and new people come along with new ideas about what you thought was settled… but,’ he slapped the table, ‘when you clean a table you clean a table. You feel you’ve done something. It’s an achievement.’

Gardening, walking in forests :)
Litter picking is also a very in-the-moment activity, like an IRL hidden object game.
I’d also say that I read a lot, but I do it on an ebook reader, so it doesn’t feel properly offline 😅

Thanks, I haven’t considered FLOSS software this way before.

Starting the counting over b/c either idk any numbers higher than 5 or b/c I don’t understand markdown.
I think the problem might be that if the numbered list is broken by bulletpoints or non-list paragraphs, it restarts the numbering from 1.

The only time I would say it isn’t justifiable, if it’s a book/game/etc. made by an unrecognised creator who needs every purchase they can get. In every other case, go for it!

oh I remember there being a literal version of this in Hungary ( Túlélők Földje ), a play-by-mail RPG where you would submit your moves on a paper form by mail and they mail you back what happens. According to wiki you could execute a series of actions every 9 days :)

this format reminds me of Twitch plays Pokemon :)
I already do that 😊 I’m originally from Hungary, but have lived in Scotland for 15+ years now. I love the weather (no, seriously) - none of Hungary’s oven-like summers and freezing winters, but mild temperatures and high humidity all year around, so mosses and some other plants that normally die in continental winters are flourishing year-round here. Sometimes it gets a bit too gloomy, but it’s a worthy cost for the temperatures :)
Also it’s a great country for the most part - don’t want to get too much into political and economical details - but the people are friendly and helpful, I very rarely see the attitudes of neurosis and apathy that seems common in Hungary (for understandable reasons).
