I thought though that the original justification for the name re-use was not that? Maybe I have forgotten something though. But as I remember it the thing you’re referring to wasn’t actually mentioned at all until after the first name re-use so it would’ve been difficult to use it as a reason.

Children of Ruin is also a good read, and the stuff about language there was also reminiscent of some elements in A Deepness in the Sky.

One thing I found unsettling (and not necessarily in a positive way) in these books is how things were going to shit on some of these ships. I found it unnerving for some reason…

I came to Children of Time via the path: A Fire upon the Deep -> A Deepness in the Sky -> Children of Time, which makes some kind of sense. The former two are by Vernor Vinge.

A Deepness in the Sky has some very obvious similarities - vast stretches of time, a specific kind of alien being, and certain kinds of encounters with them.

I read it first and I think I enjoyed it more, although both were very good. One weird little niggle I had with Children of Time was using the same name for characters across different generations. There was some in-text justification for it that I don’t remember and didn’t convince me.

Because fanfic authors are not visual artists, so they lack the skill. But probably still want the visual appeal and associations that come with having a (non-stock) book cover.

Isn’t that the reason to share creative stuff, to share a part of your “soul” with others and hope to genuinely touch someone, across time and space?

I think that’s getting a bit metaphysical. I think for a lot of people it’s just the impulse to share something neat. The mere fact that you think it’s neat means you’re sharing something of yourself, just not on this soul-bearing level that you’re talking about. It’s like the difference between sharing a cute cat pic and sharing your true thoughts on your own cat whom you love and cherish.

All the large kitchen appliances came with this place. I’m sure the oven is over 20 years old and maybe also the dishwasher. When I got here the dishwasher didn’t work and it took me ages to determine the main pump had rusted solid. An eBay replacement later and it’s been working for 6 years.

Sorry but this is one of the problems of our time. It’s not the job of a journalist to ask questions whose premises you agree with for goodness’ sake.

A know a few people who use them like a gopro - they record bike rides and stuff like that.

But you have misunderstood them - they have a very obvious recording LED, so they’re not designed to record without people’s knowledge. And they have some detection mechanism to tell (by reflected light) if you put tape over it or (electronically) if you break it, so modifying them to record secretly is not trivial.

If you actually want to record someone secretly, you could buy a button camera that an undercover journalist would use for a fraction of the price and not have to do any modification. It wouldn’t upload everything automatically to Instagram though, which I think for the target audience of the glasses is a big appeal…
