Well, I’m not saying it excuses anything, but there are still differences in interactivity, personalization, feedback, summarization, etc.

Thanks again for being willing to provide all that. In my defense, I did say expectations “can be” low, not that they always would be. It might be a moot point anyway. I’m still working out earlier steps.
Okay, thank you. I’m autistic, and social activities are very challenging for me in general, so it’s genuinely helpful to have examples that show the expectations can be low.
Just curious. I realize this community is probably the wrong place to ask, but how would you feel about someone using AI to brainstorm some date ideas but still doing the actual selection and planning themselves (and not bragging about using AI as something to admire)? To me, it doesn’t feel too different from doing a web search of “date ideas” and working off whatever lists you get.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why are so many people still fine with using "The C Word" despite it being officially a derogatory slur towards women?
27·2 months agoI watch my mouth in general, but I wish we would stop normalizing the idea that people have a right to not be offended. Also, if someone uses a slur, any judgement on them should be based on the intent behind the usage, not the usage itself. Cue the Michael Scott R-word clip here.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•I was a week away from buying a Pixel Pro 10 for GrapheneOS
2·2 months agoThe good news is that there are enough people feeling this that refuges from the enshittification are growing. We’re in one right now.
Also, while online personal computing has definitely been getting worse, offline personal computing is better than it’s ever been. Growing that is sort of like making your own walled garden.
That all said, only keep to technology as much as it improves your life. The other people saying to go into nature more have it right.

Technology@beehaw.org•Motherboard sales 'collapse' by more than 25% as chipmakers strangle enthusiast PC market to build more AI chips
2·2 months agoYeah, and even if the raw capability translated directly to performance, a 30% to 40% improvement is still on the minimum side of what I’d want from a full system rebuild. That said, I do expect an X3D chip to grab me within the next couple generations, especially if it’s AM6. I tend to keep old PCs running in various roles for decades with parts interchanging some, so if I end up skipping AM5 entirely, that’ll simplify part compatibility down the line.
For the GPU, I’m mostly just hungry for VRAM now (without going to the AI/enterprise cards), and the 24 GB in the 7900 XTX was a big part of me choosing it. The only sensible step up from there is 32 GB. I’m not going to jump to Nvidia for that though, and given the whole RAM situation and AMD dropping off the very high-end, they probably won’t have viable choices for that either anytime soon.

7·2 months agoAre you me? 5800X3D and 7900XTX is my exact setup right now.
Do you mainly mean outside of meme/shitpost/adjacent communities? They absolutely know the value of the aesthetic, so I think you can count on it sticking around in some circles at least.
Maybe we have different expectations on roasting levels then. I’m particularly thinking of all the comments making fun of Linus doing a fresh install at a LAN event, picking PopOS again, setting himself up to fail changing all his devices at once to one distro constrained by handheld support, etc. For an honest followup advice video, I’d expect them to consult with someone like Wendell first, so I wouldn’t actually expect it to be a bad video.
That video wouldn’t be for us. Also, the videos as they are are getting roasted heavily already, so it’s not like that’s gonna stop them.
I don’t think LTT’s approach is bad exactly. I really just take issue with their argument that “there are thousands of ‘switching to Linux’ videos on YouTube, so we don’t need to cover that ground again.” It’s ignoring the fact that, for better or worse, they have the biggest audience and furthest reach in the space. There’s still room for “we’re approaching this like normies would,” but I really think they need to close it up with “if you want to do this, here’s how to do it right.”

9·3 months agoI haven’t had a noise problem in a long time, but my last two theater visits (both PHM) both had seat kicking incidents.
And yes, I always drive to a theater a town over because of visual quality. I saw Dune with some friends at a local theater, and all the bright desert shots were ruined by wrinkles in the screen.
At this point, I’m probably averaging less than one theater visit per year.

6·3 months agoJust curious, how many times have you seen the movie? I went twice, and the first time I felt pretty much exactly what you described. On my second watching, having lost my expectations from the book, it felt more like they went for the right balance, still flawed, but much less so.
But yes, director’s cut please.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Did you drink alcohol when you were younger than me?
31·4 months agoIt looks like the other side needs a bit more representation here. I’m late 30’s. While I’ve had the occasional wine with friends and family, I’ve never been drunk and have no plans to change that. I’ve also never done drugs unless you count stuff like caffeine. I guess my rule of thumb is if a substance makes me not me, I don’t want it.

Good News Everyone@piefed.social•DuckDuckGo poll says 90% don't want AI in searchEnglish
4·4 months agoJust tested a few searches on the top domain in a private window with no setting changes. It looks like some search terms invoke the AI and others don’t, so that explains some differences people are seeing. I saw no change in behavior between desktop and mobile.
As someone who actually likes AI (local open models only though), I agree it needs to be off by default in all cases purely on the grounds of energy usage.

Wow, I’m really glad this topic came up. As a recent convert from Windows, it’s still muscle memory for me to yank out a flash drive as soon as the copy dialog completes. (Yes, I know ejecting a drive first is still the proper thing to do on Windows, but skipping that has not been an issue once in hundreds of cases.)
