  • I would say yes but with some trade of.

Imho, the best way is to create an account because there is so many features that i end up writting a book.

    • merging community under the same umbrella : opensource@lemmy.world, opensource@lemmy.ml… = topic (managed by sysadmin), feed (managed by users)
    • merging comment from post with the same link (access to comment from the threadiverse AND mastodon, peertube…)
    • hashtag (improve discovenability mastodon users can find our content and we can find content related to some to those hashtag)
    • flair (community filter)
    • blocklist (keyword, domain, flair, user, community…)
    • blocklist of domain related to far-right, spam
    • tool to detect AI, bot, spam…
    • following mastodon users

Mbin is also great and deserve some love.

  • My comment is probably biaised because i’m part of PieFed team (translation, wiki, idea, issue…). I hope more devs will join us :)

On the moderation side, features, PieFed reached a good maturity. We have good tools against bot, and other tools that improve our community. I dunno how other fediverse software handle that.

On UI, we are fine, there is a bottom nav bar, a search bar it works well on mobile. It is visually clean except lengthy community and menu. There is room for improvement compared to Lemmy and Mbin. It will be adressed soon :)

The main thing that most Lemmy users will miss are mobile app because PieFed API are not complete or app are in developpement. Also that’s because PieFed improve and grow at a very fast space.

However, you can use PWA (progressive web app), it works well. Also Lemmy v1.0 will catch up some piefed feature.

If you are interested, you can try it on yunohost or create an alt to try it. :)

  • I remember it well, i had high expectation then, when i read their idea and their solution, i was sad.

Honnestly, lemmy idea limit our reach and discoverability in the fediverse. On Mastodon, they have far more users than the whole threadiverse and they are doing well.

i haven’t encoutered issue with hashtags yet.

And, i like that freedom on PieFed to setup the hashtag i like. The middle ground, between freedom and moderation, would be merging flair and hashtag, then come up with a solution to allow user creating and purpose new hashtags. The downside is that you can’t create hashtug with people name as : president, senator…nor add every brand or your new local association.

    Edit : typo & clarity

For example, @Ek-Hou-Van-Braai@piefed.social you can use #SouthAfrica and combine with so many hashtag that will reach other people as #cooking, #photographie, #politic

    No, they are different.

You can change/define a user’s tag per community in the sidebar.

    For example :

And there is also pronoun. Pronoun are defined in Settings > profil.
I don’t recall well how they works. But i think you should write pronoun in the first columns, then write whatever suit you in the second columns : she/he/they…

  • that’s an incredible amount of pointless friction when just not giving a shit anymore is instant

That’s what keep the fediverse safe, so we should inform them.

why don’t the admins just immediately get pinged when a community’s last mod leaves? what happens if the last mod dies and can’t contact an admin themselves?

    Those are very good questions.

I don’t recall well but i think piefed has a feature that can adress this issue. Maybe i’m wrong but it detects mod activities (connexion). And tell admins if it is unmoderated. But i’m not sure.

  • Whilst docker offer the convenience for quick environnement installation, i think that podman deserve some love as docker does.

But that’s also up to the dev team and its capacity to maintain it. One year ago, one dev offered a podman build but it was dismissed. It was ready for production. It is the same dev that offered us the scheduled post. :)

Podman strong point is its integration with Linux. Here is a quick summary from a website :

    Use Docker Compose when:

    • You want the fastest multi-container workflow.
    • You already use Docker Engine.
    • You share stacks with developers.
    • You need a familiar compose.yaml for local development.
    • You deploy small services with Docker on one host.
    • You use existing Compose examples from projects.

    Use Podman Quadlet when:

    • You want systemd-native container services.
    • You prefer rootless containers.
    • You do not want a central Docker daemon.
    • You run long-lived services on a Linux host.
    • You want systemctl, journalctl, timers, dependencies, and auto-start.
    • You are building a self-hosted or homelab server around systemd.
    • You want containers to fit into the normal Linux service model
