This always baffled me when I had a friend who showed me his Plex server years ago.

So you’re using a service which makes it easy for you to host and access everything wherever you are, pulls in all the metadata for shows and movies and you’re not worried about them tracking all of that?

When I finally set my own up I used Jellyfin from the start, I prefer as little tracking as possible but thats just me

I also use Boost as I was using that back on Reddit. Voyager is also an excellent Lemmy app too.

I left after they closed off the API and shut down third party apps. I could never go back, whilst Lemmy hasn’t always offered the same amount of content, its always still offered good content, plus I know I’m guilt free of supporting Reddit and what a shit show they’ve become 🙂

I agree with all of your statements there, the FOMO and lock-in effect has what has lead to such a dependence.

Not to mention IT staff are heavily geared to supporting Microsoft products and eco systems. Not saying most IT professionals can’t pivot but when the whole industry is Microsoft focused then you’re at a disadvantage if you’re not up to speed.

I think its fair to be concerned.

Microsoft offers the operating system for endpoints and a good number of servers

They offer the office suite which I’m sure over 90% of companies use

They offer file sharing solutions such as OneDrive and SharePoint which integrate natively with the office suite offering

They offer the critical business services for creating accounts, managing devices, deploying software and updates, many of these features integrate natively with the operating system

They offer security services, which again, integrate natively with the operating system.

Its not impossible to find solutions to all of these, but finding reasonable alternatives that only work a fraction as good as some of the native features Microsoft offers, it’s understandable that there becomes a dependence on just sticking with the Microsoft option.

Its honestly getting to the point now where doing these home setups are so much simpler than owning these proprietary streaming boxes which have everything locked up to serve you ads or just steal data in general.

Hooking a PC up to the TV even to watch the paid services is probably better at this point.

Vyvanse ended up making the dog way bigger on some days, I’m on atomoxetine and that’s been way more manageable.

I haven’t had a gaming system.in over 10 years and I was so glad I got the steam deck. It just worked out of the box, no messing around having to set anything up or play around with settings.

I bought a few games, downloaded them and everything has been seamless. Its been the most worthwhile purchase I’ve made in quite some time.
