It’s always interesting for me to read other people’s stories like this because I never ever had any audio issues with Linux. Can’t say the same about Winslow.

2·1 month agoGlad to hear I’m not the only one who thinks a comment without replies could be deleted entirely with no harm done… 😄

2·1 month agoI see. I hope I’ll have more time to research how ActivityPub and Fediverse work. I’m sure people much smarter than me spent a lot more time thinking about these things than I have…😅

2·1 month agoWell it would prevent others from getting to know your address, preventing harm. Transparency is good, but I’m just afraid that immutable transparency easily be exploited by ill-minded people.
There’s a similar debate in blockchain, where people have put CSAM into the Bitcoin blockchain where it will be forever stored.
I guess it’s the old debate of freedom vs security.

1·1 month agoYes, if I need to choose between the graffiti and the sandblasted outline of it, I’d also pick the graffiti. But if I could power wash the graffiti and make it non-conceivable, I’d prefer that.

2·1 month agoHmm, but why does a social media need to be an immutable storage? I feel like I’m missing something here.
I know some people are against any form of censorship and yes, I see the problem with the question of who can decide what gets deleted when. I’m totally on board here. But is “nothing should ever be deleted” really the best approach?
Genuine question: if someone doxes your address on Lemmy, wouldn’t you want to be able to get it deleted?

1·1 month agoWhat’s the harm if I post “test” under a post without comments and then delete this comment one second later, without anyone having engaged with it?

5·1 month agoMakes sense, thanks for explaining! I don’t know much about ActivityPub, but you explained this point well. Also good to know that upvotes and downvotes are public… 😄

3·1 month agoI don’t wanna go back to Reddit. I know what you mean when you say “nothing is ever truly deleted”, but there is a difference between a comment being displayed as “deleted by creator” and the comment not being displayed at all while still existing under the hood.

111·1 month agoTrue. But the fact that a removed comment in a post is displayed as “deleted by creator” is a choice of the Fediverse protocol, isn’t it?

2·1 month agoYeah I totally get that. But what about comments I make on a thread that noone has replied to. Completely deleting those wouldn’t harm anyone.

2·1 month agoI can understand it if the comment is part of a thread. But I think comments without replies should be fully deletable.
The moments I have been disappointed by Linux were the moments I learned most about hardware and software.
Linux made me switch the WiFi card of my computer, which is something I’ve never done before and would have deemed “impossible”.
Linux is like a teacher that sometimes slaps you on the hands, but who is always helping you to expand your knowledge.
I want to use open-source software, developed from people for people. I don’t want corporates to exploit my data and take away my freedom.

3·2 months agoEveryone, thank you so much for your helpful comments… ❤️ I have learned a lot these two days.
I looked at rsync and borg, and I have ended up using Pika as a GUI for Borg. I am now backing up my data with Pika to two external hard disks over SSH. Both of these external hard disks are encrypted with Pika/Borg. What a wonderful tool!

71·2 months agoWow, I just used this tutorial. rsync is amazing, and this actually makes everything so much easier. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I wish we could actually migrate our accounts with all of our data…
