How to get out of this situation? Nobody knows
We all know: Russia retreat from Ukraine (incl. Crimea) so the pre 2014 acknowledged borders are reestablished. And Russia pays for damages done. (while USA and UK have to chip in too)
Under the Budapest Memorandum, Ukraine gave up the nuclear arms and received security assurances from the signatory states (the United States, United Kingdom, and Russia)
Just for the record, as this is often misunderstood, the “security assurances” were that the 3 signatories wouldnt invade or use economic coercion. US & UK have lived up to theirs, clearly Russia didnt.
I only bring it up because too many seem to think the promise was NATO boots on the ground if Russia invaded (or vice versa) which wasnt the case.
It was a shit deal but thats what was signed
If Russian allies start pulling back, then it could give Russia pause. More would have to pull back though. North Korea won’t, that’s for sure. No idea what China’s about, but probably they are very happy to take Russian money and when the war ends in Russia’s defeat, take Siberia.
