My brother saw it and he, someone who enjoys almost literally anything Star Wars or Marvel these days, told me it was basically season 4 compressed into a movie. He still said he had a fun time, but it definitely isn’t on par with a “mainline” Star Wars movie.

So basically most of the criticisms about this movie are true. I haven’t seen it myself, but tbh I’m not sure if I’m wanting to, at least in theaters.

Every Mainline Star Wars movie made after 1980 is terrible.

Other than the OT, it’s not hard to be on par with a mainline Star Wars movie. Even TLJ, which was the best of the ST, wasn’t that great. At least Mando+Grogu didn’t have the baggage of being “important”. Even if it was half baked I didn’t come out feeling like years of anticipation were for nothing. It was able to just be a fun if forgettable romp

I saw it. As a fan of the characters and shows, it gave me exactly what I expected. Which I suppose is both good and bad.

    spoiler

Jocko the Hutt (yeah, I know, it’s Rotta) was entertaining. He sort of deflated the mystique of the Hutts while also answering the question of how giant slugs ever became so feared and respected.

The swamp-alien was a very interesting character. A great example of good side-characters inhabiting Star Wars and making it feel more alive and wonderous. On the other hand, it was painfully convenient that the bounty hunter showed up at exactly the right moment, spoke to swamp guy for like ten seconds, and imparted everything he needed to know for Grogu to save Din. And also swamp guy immediately understood the situation when there were tons of other possible interpretations. Shit, for all swamp guy knew Din was 3 days dead. But, you know, it’s fine. Trying to create ambiguity that he might not survive wasn’t going to happen anyway.

The action was fun. Of course it’s never believable that (generously) 75% armor coverage makes Mando immune to blasters, but that’s Star Wars for you.

I enjoyed the smaller, personal scale of the movie, but it certainly contributed to the smaller TV-show feel. Plus, the Twins have large-scale importance and it feels slightly weird that they didn’t make more of that, but they really aren’t that big of characters.

Overall, I rate it a fun romp. Definitely worth it if you like the characters or if you like Star Wars in general and aren’t someone who typically engages with the hate. But if you dwell on how terrible Book of Boba Fett is or how The Last Jedi ruined the sequels, you’re probably not going to have a great time.

I would have to disagree with your second paragraph. It is in my view entirely bland and forgettable, and not worth the money to see in cinema. I liked the first two seasons of Mandalorian a lot, but this movie could easily have been a random 45min episode from the last season.

If it were an episode it wouldn’t’ve have had the scale it did. But otherwise I agree. You either like the characters and are willing to give some latitude to enjoy their adventures… or you don’t. In any event, I 100% agree that nothing in the movie really demands to be seen on a huge screen or with a fancy sound system.

Worth the money depends. A ticket is less than 2 months of Disney+. Less than 1 if you see a mantinee. But, if you already subscribe (which seems likely if you like the characters), that is moot. Anyway, just trying to put that into perspective. My wife and I saw it on the best local screen, and it ran us about $60 with popcorn, candy, and soda. It was fine for a date night and gave us something to talk about.

That’s the thing, I don’t agree that it had a scale requiring a movie. To me it felt like they took a random episode, filled it out with some little extra fluff and called it a day.

          Tap for spoiler

It was literally the generic script of “Mando and Grogu takes down another local crime lord” which we have seen several times before.

But, I’m glad you enjoyed it and had a nice date night 😉
