  • They are incredibly good at playing the system and making their lifestyle appear respectable so that those on the outside admire them.

They don’t use electricity - except for in the barns where the men work and can benefit from it. The women can struggle in the house without it.

They beat and abuse their animals. I’ve driven down the road and watched a Amish woman flogging her horse to get it to start pulling the buggy. They are also known for puppy mills and horrific abusive conditions for their animals.

They treat their children like they are disposable. Amish children die traumatic deaths all the time because they are unsupervised in situations that no child should ever be in. I’m actually all for free rein children but I don’t care if it’s your “lifestyle”, neglect is neglect. A 3 year old should not be in a position to get thrown off the back of a tractor and have their head run over by the wheel of the trailer, yet this kind of incident happens multiple times a year in the Amish communities where I used to run EMS. I had a family tell me that they didn’t leave their 1 year old unsupervised, the 2 year old was in charge of them.

They also hoard wealth and use their religion as an excuse to not have to follow laws or pay certain taxes or fees the rest of us do. They’re some of the richest people around.

They make delicious food and are pretty nice to talk to and interact with, but I think they are just as awful as the rest of the world.

  • I wish they’d bring back slider phones with physical keyboards. Pre-smartphone days I used to have a phone (I don’t remember what it was) that was a full touch screen with a physical home and back button on the front and then you flipped it sideways and the back slid down and there was an entire physical keyboard for easy typing/texting. I’m not interested in a folding smartphone, but if they released a slider with an actual keyboard I’d buy it in a heartbeat. I loved that phone and I loved being able to type on the screen with a digital keyboard for quick stuff or flip the keyboard out and use actual keys when I wanted to type a novel of a text message.

  • I think it depends on the tone. I’ve had my mind changed and view adjusted many times in online discussions. Does the other person come at me in a “debate” mindset, very aggressive, dismissive, hostile, or calling me names? Bye, I’m probably going to block them and move on with my life. But if they come at me with a spirit of discussion, education, and kindness as a fellow human with a differing opinion, I’ll consider what they say. I may not agree with it, but many times I have adjusted my views or even completely changed them.

I remember years ago I was completely against legalization/decriminalization of drugs. I thought that it would never be a good thing and didn’t understand why people would support it; why would you want to give people MORE access to heroin? I had commented on a website making a statement along those lines, and someone responded with a well educated comment about how a certain country (was it Brazil? I can’t remember, it was so long ago) had either legalized or decriminalized drugs and how not only did it allow them to put in place systems to help addicts, but the crime rate dropped substantially because the cartels no longer had a market to operate. I ended up doing some research and realized that this person was right, and ever since then I’ve been firmly on the side of decriminalizing drugs and putting efforts towards healthcare and helping addicts rather than punishment.

  • You know how when someone asks you to tell them about yourself and suddenly you can’t remember a single trait you have? That’s this question for me. I have trouble talking to other people because the stuff I’m into is so weird and obscure and I’ve definitely been like “well most people don’t like this but I really love…” , so I started to get really excited reading this question because finally one for me! except now I can’t think of a single obscure thing I’m into :)

  • I have the sport x20 and while they’re above your budget ($80) I just wanted to add my recommendation to soundcore. They’re my favorite over the ear earbuds that I’ve tried so far. They’re super comfortable, they stay in my ear whether I’m running or laying down with my head against a pillow, and the sound is pretty good. The only thing I don’t like is that the charging case is really finicky and if I’m not paying attention sometimes I dock them to charge and go to use them the next day and they’re completely dead. But I like them enough that when I can find a spare $80 I’m hoping to buy a second pair because I’m tired of constantly transferring this case around between my different backpacks for work, school and normal life and then having to go on a treasure hunt to figure out which bag I had them in last when I want to use them at home.
