Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You've just won a competition and now a major game developer has to make whatever game you want for free. No compromises. Your vision. Period. What game do you make?
61·2 months agoExtensible open world-y shooty thing, in the vein of Far Cry or GTA games. First class mod support so game content itself is a “mod” and nothing hardcoded. Individual, potentially really small bits of “logic”/behavior can be switched on/off/out, such as different driving physics/enemy AI modes/arcade shooter vs ballistic simulation. Behavior written in some kind of fairly accessible language. Multiplayer support.
In theory it should be (potentially) everything to everyone. That never works in practice, of course, but I think it would’ve been neat. The main goal is to take a lot of the pain in the ass out of modding so as to enable more of it, make things possible that are generally annoying/impractical in modding existing games with usually dogshit support etc

11·2 months agoWith no horse in the race, I think it’s just a reaction to seeing your name everywhere. The fedv genuinely isn’t that used to activity and everyone is understandably suspicious in the Age of Slop. I’d like to say that maybe if you proved your humanity blah blah blah, but realistically that wouldn’t be anywhere near enough

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•you know what's mildly infuriating? a reposter botEnglish
2·2 months agoTo a degree, yes, how do you build that list otherwise? Most “communities” are duds with no activity. And poor support for aggregating even identically named communities across instances means all of this is a real chore. And how do you even find the relevant ones anyway? I keep whining about discoverability on here but that’s just because it sucks

91·2 months agoUnfortunately the fact that you need 400 billion fucking things blocked to make this place less annoying… means that it is annoying. Bot accounts and communities that already exist fifty thousand other fucking places with no activity are way too trivial to spin up

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•When looking up a word definition...English
8·2 months agoAmen to that. For -ly in English, it’s a reasonably good bet it’s an adverb and will still be something if you lop it off, but in this day and age it seems like you shouldn’t need to. For starters it’s not always as obvious, and it’s an extra pointless click which people used to care about.
GRRM did derail the whole thing into such a relentlessly boring clusterfuck of “white girl goes and tries to fix the middle east” that the books will never recover either. If there was even an outside shot of ever seeing another release, I mean, which obviously there isn’t.
He’s done the software engineering thing of turning the work into such an incredibly overdone piece of shit that it’s not tempting to work on anymore, and therefore he evidently won’t.
I think the, uh, acoustics, are mostly a necessary evil. The bowl has to accommodate a ton of water splashing around without going everywhere, and ideally also not go out of its way to trap any doodoo. That can’t just be any old shape.

3·2 months agoAfter some midnight, anyway. When you say “midnight” you’re usually referring to a particular one, implied by context. Or spelled out for that matter.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•People who do not specify units of measurement in international contextsEnglish
2·2 months agoSure. As I said, it makes sense to just… not be ambiguous. As for familiarity, I don’t think you really need it? You’ll have an inkling of where the recipe came from and be 90% sure most of the time. If not, searching for one more recipe means it’s suddenly really unlikely to still be unclear. No matter what you want you could search for non-US units to rule out/convert.
Familiarity would mean it’s even easier, you’ll go “of course this is baked at around 175°C like virtually all the other things like it” and almost certainly be right. Although baking is notoriously finicky…

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•People who do not specify units of measurement in international contextsEnglish
9·2 months agoAs with everything, we know it’s all the Americans’ fault. Joking. Halfway, anyway - they are a majority of the people who, internationally speaking, wanted to be all precious about this stuff. Although even if they didn’t, it’d still seem like “good practice” to include units anyway, though.
The cooking does tend to just be context, though, or at least “same as all the other recipes”. There’s only so many sane temps to pick for any given thing, and there’s a factor of ~2 between the two choices. E.g. if you were baking, 210° is either pretty hot or way too cool for most things.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•I need a new hobby, I'm going to set up my own Lemmy instance. Am I an idiot?English
32·2 months agoNot necessarily, but why choose a project that needs interfacing with an existing ecosystem where it can mostly only be noise?
If you want to deal with a complicated mess of a system as a project, you could always grab Arch
Cork board and lots of string. My gym gimmick would be sane type composition, which was not much of a thing in the three gens plus change I played. I’m writing this as a casual who, when I replay this, still use 99.9% straight damaging STAB moves and just don’t intentionally hamstring myself with the picks. Pokemon battling is apparently very deep, but most of it still feels like doggy paddling. If you want to do “clever” things you need to go out of your way to not wipe the enemy out too quickly, and is it really clever then?
Besides, Pokemon writing/characterization/whatever being what it is, e.g. “super nerds” use poison for some reason, instead of using the purported super nerdery to, y’know, pick a team with more than 2-3 types total in it. People in-game even mention type composition all the time, because exposition, and then even the Bestest Guys in all 3 countries mostly don’t give a shit.
So without putting together any actual teams or anything, the idea would be essentially minmaxing based on type strength and weakness. Possibly my player-POV “however many types I can slug with a STAB” or the inverse “however many types I can guard against”. It doesn’t need to be super strong in an objective sense but would make sense late-ish in the game.
