I also vouch for GL.inet routers, they also have a 5th gigabit port that was nice to have since all 4 of the ones on my old router were full.

3·2 months agoNot really. Android lacks a comprehensive full-system backup option like iOS has. It’s one of my biggest gripes about the OS. Best you can do is a cloud backup, which only saves certain apps’ data like games.

201·3 months agoI mean… No? We had plagiarism checkers long before these AI checkers, and the latter very specifically advertises that it’s meant to detect if an LLM generated the text, not whether it’s original text. Completely different tools with different purposes.

Ask Science@lemmy.world•Do any computer monitor "dynamic range compressors" exist for moderating intensity and whiteness/blueness of light?English
7·6 months agoI don’t see a fundamental reason why this couldn’t exist, because in principle it would be a pretty straightforward thing to implement. It sounds like what you’re asking for is essentially a low-pass filter for the brightness of the entire screen (or, more specifically, a filter for each color channel so that blue can be filtered more than red or green)
I think the largest barrier to making something like that would be graphics APIs, as you’d need to read/buffer the entire screen and then apply the filter to every pixel. It would also probably make videos and motion look weird. But, I don’t see why it couldn’t be done.

18·10 months agoUsing a few anti-static bags inside one another doesn’t block 100% of signals but it cuts range down by a lot. But also, if you’re looking for this high of a security level, wouldn’t it be easier to just find a phone with a removable battery?

5·11 months agoI don’t think it’s unspecified, it’s to keep weeds away. Using weed killing chemicals to kill off any plants in your field apart from the specially-weed-killer-resistant crops is super common in agriculture, and is terrible for the environment.
You seem to be against the idea of growing rice in flooded fields, can I ask why? It’s not like this is in some places like California that’s in constant drought.

21·1 year agoI mean, as far as I know, DNS is decentralized. Anyone can host their own DNS server, or change which server their network/device uses. Google’s is just very commonly used because 8.8.8.8 is easy to remember, but there are thousands of others run by entities big and small, and there’s nothing stopping you from running your own (assuming you manage to get a hold of a static IPv4)

10·1 year agoDo you have a static IP address? CG-NAT has done a really great job of hindering torrents, since my understanding is that at least one side of the connection needs to have an open port. So, if you don’t, then only the few people who do are able to download from you, which can make it seem like no one wants your stuff.

14·1 year agoIve never had to download a codec to use VLC, it should come built-in with every codec you may reasonably encounter on commercial DVDs.
I have the same problem with CloudFlare’s 1.1.1.1. Are the two services related? I also remember the same issue going on with archive.is
That sounds like it was a DVD image that was mostly empty space, so any compression tool would have been able to save space. But yes, 7z is still impressive.
