  • I’m not sure you understand how a suggestion algorithm works, it’s not something that can be run locally without having to then load and process thousands of messages. There is no aspect of that that could be run locally while simultaneously not having to load all the messages you’re attempting to sort and make recommendations on.

It is not at all equivalent to a word filter, a word filter is not attempting to find something, it’s a filter that applies to things that are already being loaded regardless. When a post comes in the word filter looks to see whether or not it has a word that needs to be filtered. An algorithm needs to find new content out of all the content available and then attempt to determine whether or not it’s something that should recommend meaning the client would have to load thousands upon thousands of random posts from the Federalists in order to make that algorithm work

  • Discovery is just the worst, lemmy has a problem with it as well but it’s somehow just amplified on Mastodon. There is basically no way for me to organically find things I would be interested in. If I don’t already directly know how to find someone or something I want then I’m never going to come across it.

Compare that with blue sky which has a basic Discovery algorithm that I can pretty easily tune to what I want using filter lists I was able to very quickly get it to understand what type of artists I’m interested in following and what type of content I want to see and what I don’t want to see and through that I have discovered a bunch of artists I otherwise never would have known about.

Mastodon works good enough if you only want to follow very specific people that you already know about and can easily find but if you’re hoping to actually organically discover content I found it awful. The feeds for instances are pretty generic they don’t try to tailor to your interests it’s just a dump of whatever is on that instance or whatever it’s Federated with depending on how you view it which basically just guaranteed it was always filled with stuff I couldn’t give less of a shit about.

It’s very possible that the interface has changed since I last used it but at least when I used it the interface was pretty clunky and not very fun to use at least in my opinion, I did host my own instance for a little while and used a Twitter bot to copy the art of artists I liked over to a mastodon feed but you know all those Bots broke a little while before it became X so ended up giving up on that

People shit on them because while there are people that actually use them for real work daily that’s like maybe if I’m being super generous 5% of the market of trucks. Even out in rural areas like I am where it’s over two and a half hours to the nearest grouping of buildings large enough to even pretend to be called the city the majority of the people out here with their big ass lifted trucks never take them off the pavement and never do any real work with them.

They are just driven around as status symbols and I’m tired of seeing them, the best part being that my little smart fortwo can literally off road better than most of these four wheel trucks out here thanks to it’s short wheelbase, and I have a variable suspension so I don’t even have to be permanently dumb lifted to do it

  • The key word there is immediately, they called upon Linus but also made the media drama at the exact same time. Call upon Linus, wait for his response, if you don’t get one after a decent chunk of time then go to social media.

It’s hard to know what line is would have done had there not been the drama that exploded before he got to the thread that ultimately upset him he may have stepped in to try and smooth things over he may not have but it was pretty much guaranteed he wouldn’t when it turned into a public event as his opinion on that has been clear for a long long time

  • While I do agree that there is some very problematic maintainers that are basically blocking progress just because they are old farts that don’t like change. I do also agree with Linus that immediately running to social media to drum up drama is not the correct solution to getting it fixed.

I am ultimately on the side of the rust maintainers here however there were definitely mistakes on both sides, I am not a fan of the trend over the past few years where anytime something doesn’t go your way you try and drum up as much drama on social media as possible. I am also not a fan of policing how people choose to word things, I don’t think there was anything wrong with the context that cancer was used. They were saying that the code would eventually grow uncontrollably and in a way that was unmanageable which is the literal definition of cancer, a cell that grows in an uncontrolled and unmanageable way.

Regardless of whether or not I agree with them that it would become a problem like that, I don’t see any problem with using the word like that.

There’s also some fault with torvald here, he needs to step up and either say that rust is okay or that it’s not because this wishy-washy game is bullshit and is not helping anybody. He originally accepted it into the kernel but has been letting random maintainers create roadblocks for it he either needs to tell them to back the fuck off and get over it or he needs to get rid of the notion that rust is accepted.

He mentioned turning a technical argument into drama and while I am not anywhere near as knowledgeable at these people I didn’t see much technical debate, I saw a maintainer that clearly said they just hated rust and we’re going to do everything they could to block it and not work with anyone on it. Which doesn’t sound like a very technical based argument to me, there were a couple concerns raised but they appeared to be addressed by multiple people quite thoroughly as there was both misunderstandings and even further potential compromises offered

Oh yeah like I said I understand that it’s shockingly more expensive than it used to be or she even maybe should be. But I’ve heard people talking like they’re going to need to take out a mortgage on their house and they aren’t being sarcastic just to get eggs it just feels a bit strange how strong the reaction to the egg prices is. Meanwhile over the years we’ve let things like medicine and housing which feel like they are more important to then eggs Skyrocket in price and while we do complain about them it feels casual compared to how people are talking about eggs

Ok so, i understand that it’s way more than it used to be but… Is $10 for a dosen really THAT bad? Are People using eggs literally every meal or something? I LITERALLY heard someone complaining about this while grabbing some at costco. Like genuinely upset and acting like they can never have eggs again while they have a cart easily pushing $400 of stuff not all of which is food.

I feel like everyone is strangely focused on eggs when there are way worse things going through the roof
