Oh, neat, so is it all of the kettles in Britain that caused the global temperature spike since industrialization?

GenX American here. I thought that it might be him, but I wasn’t certain and couldn’t think of his name off the top of my head. I know he was involved in a lot of hits from my 20s, but the only reason that i recognize his face is from the Derren Brown TV spot, which I only know about because I had a co-worker who was an amateur magician.

I am convinced that nobody in the Trump administration has any understanding of economics whatsoever. It’s like their entire understanding of prosperity comes from watching mob movies.

Must be embarrassing as fuck to be an American.
It is. The most annoying thing, socially speaking, is that the ones who should feel most embarrassed absolutely are not.

Yeah, I enjoyed the movie and thought it was a pretty decent adaptation, but it’s still an adaptation of a hard sci-fi book for general audiences. The start of the book, where he’s coming up with ways to figure out where he is, using Newtonian physics and common objects, was a ton of fun for nerds like me, but would be boring af for regular audiences.
It reminds me a bit of Contact. The book is amazing. Sagan explains how one might communicate with an alien intelligence, starting from the basics of detecting signals, to communicating basic logic and mathematics, to communicating engineering diagrams. Pretty much none of that was covered in the movie, but it was still a good adaptation.

A friend of mine was shocked when I offhandedly mentioned The Rock’s likely steroid budget. “You think he uses steroids?!” she asked. This was during his monstrous peak years.
I’m also reminded of the reddit story where a guy’s girlfriend or wife suggested that he go to the gym to get into slightly better shape. Nothing excessive, “maybe like Jason Momoa in Aquaman.”

If you watch the movie, you’ll see his abdominal muscles as he’s breathing heavily. Not disagreeing with you, just pointing out that his physique is a bit more impressive than what a single photo might indicate. Definitely not the modern, roided-up action star physique. I wonder if he was even getting pumped before shooting, like modern actors do.
Some other examples are Christopher Reeve as Superman, Tom Selleck as Magnum PI, and Erik Estrada as Ponch in CHiPs. All were seen as strong, fit leading men in the late 70s and early 80s. Schwarzenegger is probably the main reason that roided-up physiques became so mainstream, along with WWF/WWE. Both exploded in popularity around the early 80s.

Not only that, but when the main character wakes up at the start of the book, he is baffled as to why he’s so muscular. I guess the problem with the movie is that he wasn’t visibly skinnier during the classroom flashback scenes.

While they cannot enjoy a good, long run, they can at least take solace in their Instagram popularity.

They’d be shot, at best, arrested and imprisoned in the US
Worth it.

It absolutely blows my mind that no world leader has taken the opportunity, during one of these photo sessions, to simply punch the orange idiot right in the nose. I can think of no human being more in need of such a tune-up.

The average office worker has a good chance of a complete meltdown if an icon on their desktop is moved. Government and business are not going to move to Linux on the desktop.
I fully recognize the absurdity of this, particularly in an era when a huge number of office jobs are basically just interacting with a web browser. I’ve just spent enough time writing software for “regular folks” to see why it’s not going to happen.

Most importantly, love requires both partners to be emotionally vulnerable, right? So then under gender roles, men can’t love women, only objectify them?
By that logic, a man or woman can’t love his or her child. Children don’t really want to see their parent(s) being vulnerable. Is it good to model vulnerability for, say, a teenager? Sure. But if you’re breaking down in tears in front of your four year old, you’re probably going to upset and frighten the child.
I think that people’s interpretations and expectations of ‘love’ vary tremendously, and plenty of people feel like they’re in secure, loving relationships that you wouldn’t see any value in.

Over here, it came out that the city had an NDA with the data center developer. How can you possibly have effective representative democracy when you don’t know what your representative is agreeing to?! It’s not like it’s national security, it’s a damn data center!

I’ve read that women’s skin is elastic along two axes while men’s skin is elastic along only one axis. Is true, or variable across a spectrum, or simply false?

I feel like that boils down to “I want a chart, but in words instead of visualization.”

Thank you for proving my point.

Those are completely separate things. American right wingers were pouring out wine and throwing cheese away as a “fuck you” to the French who dared not support GWB. These were the days when I regularly read “if you don’t support our President, you’re not a real American.”
It had nothing to do with France’s history. If Germany refused to back us, right wingers would have been selling or crushing their BMWs and Mercedes in a performative fashion.
This is just how the right wing behaves. If they don’t get what they want, they demonize whoever didn’t support them. It’s the same way that Trump runs everything: like a petulant mob boss.

Americans saw the French as surrending cowards due to WWII, long before the while Iraq thing. I have no idea why there are two people in these comments pushing this claim that it’s due to the Iraq war.
The jokes were always ignorant, but they’ve been around since WWII.
If anyone criticizes it, they just laugh at how they got the liberals upset. This sort of disingenuous, trolling interaction is core to their behavior. Said something too racist? “LOL libtard, it was a joke, why are you so triggered?” No error is ever acknowledged. Instead, they simply pretend it was all a joke or manipulation in order to upset you. Sure, they’re gullible, but “their side” is part of their identity, and they’re willing to lie to everyone, including themselves, to maintain the illusion of strength and correctness.
