I didn’t even consider that, but yes if votes can’t be private then it’s bad to pretend that they are. It looks like there’s been some debate on the topic, but the decision was apparently to keep pretending.
Father; husband; mechanical engineer. Posting from my self-hosted Lemmy instance here in beautiful New Jersey. I also post from my Pixelfed instance.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought the issue was with the follower approval feature. Apparently on Mastodon, users have the option to review all prospective followers. With this setting enabled, no one is supposed to be able to just follow your account with a click. You have to approve each one. Pixelfed wasn’t honoring this setting. I think it’s a bad feature that gives anyone who uses it a false sense of security.

Got one!

No idea.

Well, puns are the quintessential dad crime.

Perhaps I’m ashamed to admit that there’s no crime in asking.

Do the cameras just connect to a switch with PoE?

Around here in New Jersey, yes. People typically replace their doorbell switches with camera devices from Google or Amazon. People even set them up at their apartment doors. Dedicated NVR systems are also commonly installed in houses. In my case, I am not especially concerned about break-ins. Break-ins are rare in my neighborhood and I don’t think a camera system would do much to prevent one anyway. There have just been some nuisances over the past year including my bird feeder camera getting swiped and someone repeatedly letting their dog poop right next to my house without cleaning it up. I’d like to be able to have recordings of problems like that so I can maybe do something about it. Also, I like the idea of being able to check on things when I’m away.

Thanks!

I also have dog. Lots of great features exclusive this platform, but it has a few shortcomings as you mentioned.

Does defending Israel include extending equal rights to Palestinians and allowing the right of return for refugees and their descendants? Netanyahu or not, I don’t think an apartheid state should be defended, especially with resources that could instead be used to help with domestic issues in the US.

Thank you!

Mechanical engineer here self-hosting my own Lemmy and Pixelfed instances in a Yunohost VM on an old Ubuntu box. It just feels better being my own admin.
I think Yunohost is great. It was easier for me to set up that trying to figure out Docker. I run a few sites including AdGuard Home as well as personal Pixelfed and Lemmy instances with it in a VM on an older Ubuntu box. That said, I’m stuck on Lemmy 0.18.2 without pict-rs because the update script to the latest version available on Yunohost (0.18.3 with pict-rs) is broken. Oh well!
Is this really still true about images federating in Lemmy? In any case, I think the problem can be avoided by disabling pict-rs.

The ADL’s response is included in the article. It’s predictably petulant, but they didn’t go that far.

Jellyfin and Yunohost are two projects that have simplified self-hosting and made it accessible for me. I just think more progress can be made in that direction.
and yet, here we are, on lemmy.
As far as I can tell, you are not self-hosting the Divisions by Zero Lemmy instance, so I’m not sure what your point is there. I am actually self-hosting my lemmy.crimedad.work instance with the help of Yunohost.
We’ve got to do something about these mods, folks.
