196@lemmy.blahaj.zone•Americans kinda don't like pickpocketing ruleEnglish
1·7 months agoI’ve confronted some litterbugs in the past. Sometimes they get indignant and try to talk shit, but since I usually start my picking up the trash and then saying something, the usual responses are, I didn’t mean to do that, or, I was going to get that. To which I usually just say, yeah, sure you were buddy, and walk away. One time it was pretty sketch, big ass dude got real aggro, but fuck him, don’t litter.
That’s called taxes. That’s literally what taxes are, destruction of currency. Go pay your taxes to the treasury in cash, they will literally shred it.

World News@quokk.au•Syria orders women to cover up on beaches with conservative new dress code
2·7 months agoWestern nations spent billions to overthrow the secular government of Syria and install this regime. They’re prosperous because they do this to anyone who dares to not open themselves for exploitation.

4·8 months agoIt’s only been out for less than 48 hours… and there’s videos of people lining up outside stores all around the world. I just checked and every store within 75mi (the longest range I can do on popfindr) is sold out. Sounds about like every other Nintendo launch except the WiiU

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•people keep talking about how "em dashes" are evidence of ai. i use them all the time. am i a computer now?
4·8 months agoPush dash twice on a phone, no alt code needed. Almost no one uses social media on a computer anymore.
They’re already in a union, this is China. All companies over a certain size are unionized by law.
Tortillas. Just tortillas. Warmed over a gas burner. It’s a comfort food to me now, but there was a time when all I had was tortillas, and it tastes better than my other struggle meal, which was a single cup of rice with whatever spices I had on hand and hadn’t put on the previous day. I lost a lot of weight around then. Still haven’t fully gained it back ten plus years later, and still struggle eating regularly more than once or twice a day.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there homelessness in China? Why or why not? What happens in China if someone can't pay rent?
3·9 months agoAlso because WeChat is definitively the best app on the internet for communicating with their Chinese friends and family both at home and abroad.

World News@lemmy.world•Foreign companies flock to ‘panda bond’ market in hunt for China hedgeEnglish
1·9 months agoNot exactly bonds, but my Chinese stocks have outperformed my US stocks for months now. My BYD shares are up over 60% in less than a year. They seem to have stabilized around $100/share right now, but it’s still leagues ahead of where my US stocks are.
Not to mention the US still hasn’t paid reparations for their genocide, and trump dismantled programs designed to clean up Vietnam era bombs and pollution that still kill people there, while China is partnering with them to build infrastructure. There’s still a lot of animosity over Chinas invasion though, they really should have sided with the Vietnamese over the Khmer Rouge, but they were trying to get closer to the US at that time, who also supported the Khmer Rouge.

World News@lemmy.world•China Displaces U.S. as Global Leader in Research - FPIFEnglish
1·10 months agoThere’s differences in the languages even written, for example in mandarin thank you is 感谢/谢谢 whereas in Cantonese it’s 多謝 or 唔該 depending on context. Cantonese also typically uses traditional characters rather than simplified. That second character up there in 多謝 is 谢 but in traditional rather than simplified. I’d imagine most research papers are going to be in simplified Chinese with mandarin phrasing, but learning traditional characters and going to simplified might be easier than learning simplified and then going to traditional.

155·10 months agoMandarin is the most accessible and widely spoken, Cantonese is good if you want to spend a lot of time in the south. Good luck if you want to learn one of the hundreds of other dialects, maybe make a friend from one of the places and have them help you.

15·1 year agoI wish. Min wage in some parts of China provides a similar purchasing power as I have making more than 4x the min wage in the US. I would actually be able to afford a house in my lifetime if that were true.

Yeah, this isn’t anything new. Literally centuries old analysis here. I guess it’s nice they updated it for the contemporary society, though.
